Acceptable Experience and Training
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology, Zoology, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related field; and one year of experience in a publicly owned wastewater treatment plant, industrial wastewater treatment plant or a closely related industry working in a regulatory compliance role; and one year of experience performing environmental analysis with a minimum of six months experience using a GC/MS, AA, TOC analyzer ICP spectrophotometer or automated portable sampler.

LICENSE OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid Iowa driver’s license or evidence of equivalent mobility. Possession of valid Grade II Iowa Wastewater Operator license within one year of appointment, unless the Department Director for unique circumstances grants an extension.
Manage, plan, organize, and carry out the Hauled Waste Program, Industrial Pretreatment Program, and Fats, Oil, and Grease Program (FOG) including review of discharge applications, issuing permits, conducting industrial surveys and on‑site inspections, inspecting vehicles, preparing required reports, and issuing invoices for services. Track industrial user compliance, determine and recommend enforcement action. Assist with the preparation of annual budget. Set up and collect field samples from commercial and industrial discharges.
Monitor industries and maintain quality assurance, quality control, and integrity of samples. Explain sampling procedures and permit requirements to commercial/industrial users. Collect samples from wastewater treatment plant processes, outfalls and bodies of natural water. Investigate pollutants to locate source and inspects facilities for pollution potential. Prepare reagents and samples for laboratory analyses. Operate complex laboratory instruments. Prepares daily reports of tests results.
Operate, calibrate, and performs routine maintenance on laboratory and sampling equipment. May testify in court on matters related to wastewater violations. Performs technical laboratory research projects. Performs related duties as required.
