Education/Certification
Required:
Have an associate degree or 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university. Certification as an interpreter from The Texas Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) or Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Level 1 or higher (BEI interpreter's certified prior to January 1, 2012, are exempt from the education requirements above)

Required:
Proven performance in a position with similar responsibilities or successful completion of a recognized interpreter-training program

- Communicates effectively in Signed English, American Sign Language, written correspondence, and verbally
- Demonstrates commitment to professional interpreter ethics
- Good work attendance record
- Ability to relate well with students, professional staff, and parents/guardians
- Ability to work under pressure and to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to work independently with little or no supervision
- Require appropriate attire and good personal appearance
- Technology proficiency:

Function:
The Certified Interpreter (Regional Day School Program for the Deaf) provides interpreting services for deaf and hard-of-hearing students and staff for: instruction, tutoring, teacher-student conferences, extra-curricular activities, parent/guardian meetings, professional development, and routine daily communication.
Reports To:
Coordinator for Regional Day School Program for the Deaf
Responsibilities:
- Interprets for students in the appropriate communication mode in instructional, administrative, and co-curricular activities.
- Interprets for staff members and parents/guardians as appropriate and as needed.
- Provides mentoring to newly hired or newly certified educational interpreters under the supervision of the RDSPD Coordinator.
- Provides direct instruction to deaf or hard of hearing students in situations apart from interpreting responsibilities and under the supervision of an RDSPD teacher.
- Maintains interpreter certification.
- Prepares for interpreting assignments by regular review and study of subject matter and sign language vocabulary.
- Supervises deaf and hard of hearing students under the direction of an RDSPD teacher.
- Participates in professional development activities as approved by the RDSPD Coordinator.
- Maintains appropriate travel and overtime documentation and reports.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the RDSPD Coordinator, the Director for Special Education, and/or the campus principal.

Working Conditions:
- Challenging situations; extended periods of time standing and signing; and daily in-district travel is possible
- Ability to receive information and/or instruction from internal/external customers through spoken expression
- Ability to manipulate tools/equipment/keyboards
- Ability to convey information and/or instruction to internal/external customers through spoken expression
- Ability to perform work while standing and/or walking for extended periods, up to eight (8) hours a day
- Ability to see detailed information, naturally or with correction
Salary: ISUP/507: $25.37 minimum/hour (individual salary calculation is based on applicable experience)
