Position Summary

The Nurse Supervisor, reporting to the Director of Nursing, participates in structuring, planning, and implementing the Nursing Services Program to deliver quality health care. Responsibilities include patient assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation; guiding patient teaching; and maintaining professional nursing standards.

Duties / Responsibilities
  • Receives and reviews daily outpatient and infirmary reports.
  • Oversees all infirmary and clinic nursing functions and acts as a consultant to facilitate offender care.
  • Coordinates offender care requirements with other departments and ensures continuity of care with outside health care facilities.
  • Provides functional direction and guidance to nursing staff through on-job training and ensures appropriate orientation for newly hired staff.
  • Participates in planning, priority setting, and development of policies and procedures that comply with contractual requirements, jail, and national standards.
  • Coordinates and monitors orientation, in-services and continuing education within Nursing Services; plans, develops and conducts training classes for professional and paraprofessional patient care personnel.
  • Provides hands-on patient care or accepts nursing assignments to ensure contracted care is provided.
  • Coordinates development, provision and evaluation of patient care according to quality standards.
  • Conducts recruitment and retention efforts for Nursing Services.
  • Assists with evaluation of nursing personnel and administrative support for personnel functions.
  • Familiar with overtime and commodity budgets, working to remain within budget.
  • Notifies the Director of Nursing and/or Health Services Administrator of staffing variances related to contract requirements.
  • Ensures 100% compliance with contracted staffing hours and additional staffing hours.
  • Enforces Wexford Health/facility policies, ensuring subordinate compliance.
  • Ensures existence of an Infection Control Program, supervises its activities and monitors compliance with policies and community standards.
  • Prepares and submits monthly reports as requested by the Health Services Administrator.
  • Conducts regular meetings with staff to maintain effective communication within the Health Care Unit.
  • Acts as administrator on call for nursing emergencies or staff needs.
  • Member of the Quality Assurance Committee; attends meetings as requested.
  • Assists with development and maintenance of staffing schedule to ensure adequate coverage per contract terms.
  • Ensures practice of nursing is consistent with current standards and facility policies.
  • Serves as liaison between nursing services and other health care providers, lab, physical therapy, and coordinates patient care services.
  • Provides guidance to nursing staff on patient care problems; delegates responsibility within scope of employee abilities.
  • Remains visible and responsive to all medical disciplines.
  • Supports evaluation initiatives to improve work conditions and patient care; evaluates performance according to policies and timelines.
  • Participates in community organizations as requested and maintains good relationships.
  • Keeps abreast of incidents occurring on all shifts.
  • Counsels nursing personnel in established protocols.
  • Reviews discrepancies in sharps and tool counts, investigates, reconciles and applies corrective action.
  • Reviews mediation errors, investigates, reconciles and applies corrective action.
  • Active in discharge planning and coordinates continuity of offender care with outside facilities.
  • Responds to offender medical grievances as requested.
  • Receives direction from site administrative personnel as appropriate, ensuring contract terms of nursing coverage are met.
  • Coordinates special projects as requested, e.g., nurse audits, development of nursing policies and procedures.
Job Requirements
  • Licensure:
    Current, unrestricted Texas Registered Nurse License.
  • Certification:
    Current CPR Certification.
  • Education:

    Graduate from an accredited school of nursing. Associate’s Degree required;
    Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • Preferred Experience:

    Minimum two to three years of clinical experience; previous supervisory experience preferred; correctional nursing experience a plus.
