Department Overview

The CHRISTUS Spohn South Labor and Delivery, Antepartum and Obstetrical Emergency Departments are staffed by a cross‑trained team of Registered Nurses, OB Surgical Technicians, Certified Nurse Aides and Unit Secretaries. We have 24‑hour CRNA coverage for maternity anesthesia and an in‑house OB Hospitalist to accept transfers and handle emergencies. We average about 220 deliveries per month and provide care for tests, inductions, postpartum complications, and can begin emergency care within 30 minutes of decision time.

The competent Nurse, in a similar clinical setting, practices independently, demonstrates awareness of all relevant aspects, provides routine and complex care, copes with and manages contingencies, and delegates appropriately to help manage the clinical situation.

• Consistent with the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, provides nursing care utilizing the nursing process, including assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention and evaluation for assigned patients.
• Addresses increasingly complex psychological, emotional, cultural, and social needs of patients and families in accordance with their level of practice.
• Administers medications and treatments with appropriate protocol; monitors for side‑effects and effectiveness.
• Documents patient history, symptoms, medication, and care given.
• Assesses learning needs and provides education to patients, family members, and/or caregivers; identifies issues and resources.

Education/Skills

• Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing, preferred

Experience

• 1 year of experience in a related nursing specialty, preferred

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications

• BLS required
• RN License in the state of employment or compact

• All newly hired experienced RNs must attend New Nurses Orientation within the first 30 days of hire.
• New hires are precepted by a designated trained staff member and initial onboarding requirements are validated through successful completion of the designated organizational entry competency validation and a Perinatal Services‑specific competency validation.
• Completion of all annual competency verification requirements.

• Perinatal RN Residency or recent practice in a Perinatal Setting is preferred.

• Current certification required from one of the following: AWHONN Intermediate FHM, AWHONN Intermediate FHM Instructor, AWHONN Advanced FHM Instructor, AWHONN Instructor Trainer, or NCC Electronic Fetal Monitoring (C‑EFM).
• Current NRP certification required.
• Current ACLS certification required.

In accordance with the CHRISTUS Health License, Certification and Registration Verification Policy, all Associates are required to obtain required certifications for their respective positions within the designated time frame.

• BLS: No grace period for Experienced Associates and for New Graduates & Experienced Associates New to Specialty.
• ACLS: Within 30 days of hire for Experienced Associates; within 90 days for New Graduates & Experienced Associates New to Specialty.
• PALS: Within 30 days of hire for Experienced Associates; within 90 days for New Graduates & Experienced Associates New to Specialty.
• TNCC: Within 60 days of hire for Experienced Associates; within 18 months for New Graduates & Experienced Associates New to Specialty.
• TCAR: Within 60 days of hire for Experienced Associates; within 18 months for New Graduates & Experienced Associates New to Specialty.
• NRP: Within 30 days of hire for Experienced Associates; within 60 days for New Graduates & Experienced Associates New to Specialty.
• AWHONN INTERMEDIATE FHM: Within 30 days of hire for Experienced Associates; within 60 days for New Graduates & Experienced Associates New to Specialty.
• STABLE (Neonatal Education): Within 30 days of hire for Experienced Associates; within 60 days for New Graduates & Experienced Associates New to Specialty.
