Job Summary

This position is available for Morning, Evening, and Night shifts on multiple homes. The state supported living centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or have behavioral problems. The centers provide campus‑based direct services and supports.

Responsibilities
  • Performs advanced vocational nursing work, providing care, treatment, and general welfare of individuals with complex medical, mental health, and/or behavioral health issues.
  • Performs basic and advanced routine and non‑routine nursing tasks to promote health, collects specimens for lab work, performs health screenings, and provides on‑the‑job instruction for LVNs.
  • Administers medications and treatments orally, rectally, internally, or by injection; makes rounds and home visits; performs complex technical nursing procedures such as tracheostomy care, gastrostomy/jejunostomy care, wound and breathing treatments.
  • Monitors individuals’ weight, diet, feedings, vitals, health status, and signs of illness; documents treatments and observations in electronic health records or paper charts.
  • Fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, communicates pertinent information to team members, and collects data for RNs/Primary Care Providers.
  • Trains and oversees LVNs, provides feedback, assists with on‑the‑job training, and observes new LVNs to ensure competency.
  • Assists RNs with protocol implementation, infection control, quality assurance programs, and therapeutic nursing programs; participates in quality improvement initiatives and committees.
  • Responds to emergency situations, follows safety and infection control procedures, and provides educational safety training to staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including disaster response, recovery, or COOP activation.
Qualifications / KSAs
  • Knowledge of nursing care standards, procedures, and techniques; emergency procedures and equipment (CPR).
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws and ICF‑IID regulations related to State Supported Living Centers.
  • Reasoning skills to identify problems and consider appropriate solutions.
  • Computer skills for electronic health records and other software.
  • Organizational, coordination, and evaluation skills to manage nursing activities and interpret policies and regulations.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Current CPR certification and physical ability to perform CPR.
Experience & Training
  • Graduation from an LVN program.
  • 6 months prior employment experience as an LVN; at least 12 months preferred.
  • Experience working or volunteering with individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities preferred.
  • Experience in training, teaching, or leading others preferred.
  • Experience using an electronic health record system preferred.
Licensure & Certifications

Licensed to practice as a licensed vocational nurse in Texas or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact.

Additional Requirements
  • Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks including CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, LEIE.
  • All state supported living center employees are subject to random drug testing.
  • Flexibility in work hours may be required; overtime and extended hours may be required; workers must be willing to work weekends and holidays.
  • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
