Overview

SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of the Animal Control Manager, performs animal care, kennel maintenance, and routine shelter operations. Provides clerical and customer service support for animal intake, impoundment, adoption, redemption, and release activities.

This position is required to work before, during, and after natural disasters, emergencies or other critical incidents, as directed by the Department Head or designee.

Work Schedule

WORK SCHEDULE: This is a full-time position with a standard 40-hour work week. Work schedules include weekends and may require working consecutive days, including all seven days of the week, based on operational needs.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Provide daily feeding, watering, exercise, enrichment, and humane care for shelter animals.
  • Perform intake, processing, and documentation of animals in accordance with departmental policy and supervisory direction.
  • Maintain legally required quarantine and observation records in accordance with state law, rabies control regulations, and departmental policy.
  • Administer vaccinations and medications and perform basic animal health monitoring as authorized and trained.
  • Bathe animals and provide basic grooming to support animal health and adoptability.
  • Release animals to owners, adopters, and approved rescue organizations in accordance with established policies, procedures, and supervisory direction.
  • May assist with or be exposed to humane euthanasia procedures in accordance with departmental policy.
  • Dispose of animal carcasses in accordance with applicable laws, safety standards, and departmental procedures.
  • Clean, disinfect, and maintain animal housing areas, grounds, and equipment in accordance with state and local regulations.
  • Monitor kennel and facility conditions and report maintenance, equipment, or pest control issues.
  • Perform minor facility maintenance or repairs as needed.
  • Accurately maintain shelter records, logs, and observation documentation.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment and report shortages or concerns.
  • Take photographs and short videos of animals for use in shelter records, adoption listings, and official social media or promotional platforms.
  • Provide guidance to volunteers and community service workers as assigned.
  • Assist with community outreach events, including adoption events, vaccination clinics, and public education activities.
  • Transport animals to veterinary clinics, rescue partners, or other approved locations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

  • Ability to work in a shelter environment and varying weather conditions, including inclement weather.
Education and/or Experience

EDUCATION and/or

EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED), a minimum of six months of experience working with animals required.

Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
