Position: Ammonia Refrigeration Technician I

OVERVIEW

Support the manufacturing and warehouse campus through maintenance, repair, and construction of ammonia refrigeration, plant utilities, automated systems, and building services.

As a Stationary Systems Operator you will operate and maintain multiple steam and refrigeration systems that serve H‑E‑B warehousing and manufacturing facilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Refrigeration Operations – Perform basic refrigeration operations (equipment online/offline, water testing, oil draining, charging compressors, etc.), engine room checks, pump‑downs, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Refrigeration Mechanical – Perform mechanical maintenance and repair tasks, assist higher‑level operators with installation and troubleshooting of industrial refrigeration equipment.
  • Refrigeration Electrical – Read and apply basic electrical diagrams, use test equipment (ammeter, multimeter) for measurements on AC/DC circuits 12–480 V, assist with complex electrical equipment.
  • Refrigeration Maintenance – Preserve piping/equipment with paint coatings, inspect and maintain screw compressors, purgers, centrifugal pumps, condensers, evaporators, valves.
  • Boiler Operations – Conduct boiler room checks, perform blowdown, start‑up/shut‑down of boilers and auxiliary equipment, test and treat boiler water and feed water.
  • Boiler Maintenance & Repair – Assist in preparing boilers for inspections, troubleshoot and repair complex steam equipment.
  • Compliance & Safety – Act as a first responder in HAZMAT situations, follow SOPs for logs, work orders, lockout‑tagout, and maintain appropriate stationary engineer license.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 2 years experience in industrial maintenance.
  • Pass RETA‑CARO certification within one year.
  • 40‑hour HAZMAT certification (or ability to obtain).
  • Boiler operator license (or ability to obtain).
  • Strong organization, time‑management, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain attention to detail.
  • English language proficiency.
  • Initiative and willingness to learn and develop.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Work while standing, sitting, stooping, bending, and with hands over heads.
  • Climb and work from a 25‑foot ladder or other elevated platforms.
  • Occasionally lift and carry up to 90 lbs.
  • Operate in extreme temperatures ranging from –20 to 130 °F.
  • Pass an annual HAZMAT physical.
  • Obtain and maintain required stationary engineer license per local, state, or federal codes.
