SummaryResponsible for new construction and construction maintenance activities at the County parks, other than contracted projects. The employee is required to be on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies, as directed by the supervisor.
Organizational RelationshipsWorks under the direct supervision of the Supervisor of Park Maintenance and Park Foreman at the location assigned. Has contact with vendors and other department personnel.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Assist in planning, designing, and budgeting for projects involving construction, repair, and remodeling of Parks Department buildings and equipment.
- Perform construction and finishing activities such as general carpentry, walls, doors, partitions, remodeling buildings, cabinetry, shelves, sheet rock installation, fencing, painting, sealing, roofing, windows, carpeting, vinyl wall covering, and more.
- May be given electrical and plumbing assignments.
- Report on progress and completion of each project.
- Pick up and/or receive equipment and supplies, maintain inventory of equipment and materials.
- Keep carpentry shop and van clean and orderly.
- Maintain parks, buildings, and fairgrounds: trimming trees, bushes, removing garbage, cleaning litter, sanitizing restrooms.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Education & ExperienceHigh school diploma or GED; plus at least three years’ experience in carpentry, construction trades, and/or facility maintenance, or equivalent combination.
Language Skills- Read and interpret safety rules, operations and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals.
- Write routine reports and correspondence.
- Speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
- Calculate figures and amounts: discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, volume.
- Apply basic algebra and geometry concepts.
- Solve practical problems with limited standardization.
- Interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Must have an appropriate Texas Driver’s License. Vehicles must have a clean driving record.
OtherSkills and Abilities
- Familiarity with hand tools and power tools used in construction.
- Knowledge of park maintenance procedures and safety procedures.
- Ability to perform arduous duties under adverse conditions.
- Proficiency in oral and written communications.
- Establish effective working relationships with employees, officials, and the public.
- Maintain good driving record and applicable Texas driver’s license.
- Knowledge of first aid.
Regularly handle, lift up to 100 lbs, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, walk, reach; lift 25-50 lbs frequently. Requires vision: close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception.
Work EnvironmentWork outside weather, near moving mechanical parts, wet/humid conditions, fumes, electrical shock, vibration, high places, explosives, chemicals, and radiation. Noise usually loud.
