Sanitation Operator I is responsible for safe collection of residential refuse, recycling, brush, debris and sludge from wastewater plants. They will be trained in refuse, disposal, composting and recycling equipment.
Responsibilities- Perform routine maintenance of assigned equipment, such as greasing joints and brushings, checking/adding motor oil, DEF, hydraulic fluid, tire pressure, blowing out filters and other items required on individual equipment. Some equipment requires operating a heated pressure washer, airless sprayer, or chemical cleaners.
- Able to read maps, use navigation tools and valves and problem-solving skills.
- Able to work on feet and provide physical labor in areas of the Transfer Station, landfill and solid waste yards and other locations in the city and surrounding areas.
- Able to operate two or more types of sanitation equipment (Class
B) including automated side-loader (right-steer vehicle), semi-automated side-loader (right-steer vehicle), semi-automated rear loader, debris and brush collection vehicles including truck-mounted rear-steer, self-loader grapple truck and roll-off truck. - Train and operate the following as needed:
Construction equipment, wheeled loader 544K equivalent and larger, track dozer D6 equivalent or larger, excavator, motor grader, 8-yard dump truck and forklift. - First responder during times of natural disaster, such as hurricane clean up and emergency dispatch from the police department to clear streets and highways of fallen trees and debris with ability to work through the night.
- Professional communication with public to inform them of Solid Waste Services.
- Attend public events and community outreach events.
- Basic data entry skills to operate tablet, take photos, document labor hours and materials used and fill in reports.
- May be asked to perform other duties as assigned.
- Non-Exempt – Full-Time, 40-Hour Work Week, Monday through Thursday, 7:00 am – 6:00 pm.
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement.
- In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services.
- High School Diploma/ GED.
- Two (2) years of experience.
- Register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse.
- A valid Class B Commercial driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire.
