Job Title
Drives and ensures proper maintenance and operation of vehicles in road and bridge, maintenance, and repair activities. Performs routine maintenance support work.
Job DescriptionThe employee is required to be on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies, as directed by the supervisor. Regularly operates, inspects, and evaluates machinery, equipment, and systems to include dump trucks, pickup trucks, water trucks, patch trucks, rollers, street sweepers, and other equipment as assigned. Loads truck; hauls dirt, gravel, caliche, water, garbage and/or other materials and equipment to designated areas;
and unloads truck. Maintains vehicles in ready working condition, including fuel, proper lubrication and cleaning. Examines vehicle for needed repairs and routine maintenance and reports necessary repairs. Performs routine maintenance support and activities to include roadway maintenance and construction work, drainage work, sign work, traffic control, etc. May operate a mower or seaweed rake to remove grass from roads and rights of way or debris from roadways.
May use chain saw to cut and remove brush and debris from streets, rights of way, and alleys. May serve as a substitute dispatcher. May perform light carpentry, painting, concrete, or other repair work as needed.

Education and/or experience:
Must have a high school diploma (or GED certificate) plus at least six months of experience as a truck driver. Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities, may be considered for current Nueces County employees only. Language skills:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Mathematical skills:
Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. Reasoning ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Certificates, licenses, registrations:
Must possess a Texas Class B Commercial Driver's License; tanker, and no restrictions. Other skills & abilities:
Ability to operate generators, pumps, hand tools and a 2-way radio. Ability to operate pickup truck, dump truck, tractor, sedan, flatbed truck and garbage truck. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other county employees, officials, and the general public. Physical demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands or arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Work environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
