Material Handler
Duties
- Duties include stock selection, stowing, location survey, physical inventory, material handling, examining and identifying material, packing, and operating Material Handling Equipment (MHE).
- Receive, unload and process incoming shipments, check documentation against labels, and report over/short, misdirected, or damaged materials.
- Pack and/or repack items using appropriate packing materials and techniques based on commodity.
- Assemble items for shipment in loading area according to shipping requests and check container condition before loading; ensure shipments are loaded onto correct conveyances.
- Count and tally items during inventories; recalculate or search other locations to resolve discrepancies.
- Operate material handling equipment such as forklifts, warehouse tractors, or general-purpose vehicles.

- Must obtain and maintain a valid Material Handling Equipment (MHE) license.
Applicants will be rated against the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Applicants must meet the screen‑out element (SOE): perform the common tasks of a Distribution Process Worker with close supervision, such as identifying condition codes, classification, reparability, and non‑reparability of items. Experience (paid or volunteer) is considered to demonstrate required knowledge and skill.
Physical EffortStands on hard surfaces for extended periods. Bends, stoops, and works in tiring positions. Lifts up to 40 pounds; heavier loads require assistance.
Working ConditionsWorks in hot, damp, cold, drafty, poorly lit areas. Exposed to cuts, scrapes, bruises, noise, abrasions, falls, and falling stock. Protective clothing (steel‑toed shoes, respirators, safety glasses, earplugs) required. Mechanized roller conveyors commonly present.
