The Medical Technician (Traveler) performs routine and moderate-complexity laboratory testing under the guidance of Medical Technologists and Laboratory Supervisors. This role supports diagnostic accuracy and patient care by following established laboratory procedures, quality control standards, and regulatory requirements. The position utilizes automated and manual testing procedures, ensures accurate documentation, and maintains compliance with CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and laboratory safety standards.
Key Responsibilities- Perform laboratory testing following established specimen handling, processing, and reporting procedures
- Set up, monitor, and operate automated testing systems and pre-calibrated devices
- Conduct manual testing requiring professional judgment
- Analyze specimens using approved testing procedures per departmental SOPs
- Review, validate, and release test results
- Maintain records demonstrating proper handling of proficiency testing samples
- Document quality control activities, calibrations, maintenance, and corrective actions
- Identify testing issues, resolve when appropriate, or escalated to senior technologists or supervisors
- Report critical results according to departmental procedures
- Maintain accurate records of all on-site testing activities
- Ensure reagents and test kits are properly labeled with received, opened, and expiration dates
- Participate in training, safety sessions, and departmental meetings
- Maintain laboratory cleanliness and professional appearance
- Protect patient confidentiality at all times
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Required
- Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple procedures simultaneously
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety standards
- Effective communication and customer service skills
- Ability to collaborate with laboratory staff and other departments
Preferred
- BS/BA in Chemistry or Biology, or
- Associate’s degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology
- 1–3 years of clinical laboratory experience
- Experience with moderate-complexity testing (training provided as applicable)
- Adherence to CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and laboratory safety policies
- Participation in required safety and compliance training
- Knowledge of safety manuals, procedures, and emergency equipment
