Laborer I / II - Utility System Maintenance Job Summary
Laborer provides manual labor in the repair and maintenance of City water and sewer systems. Assists in replacing and repairing water or sewer lines, unstopping sewer lines, making water/wastewater taps and repair of water meters and meter leaks. Positions in this class are normally first filled at level I and advancement to level II is based on prior experience, licenses, certifications, and/or satisfactory job performance.
Responsibilities- Assist in replacing or repairing damaged water and sewer lines.
- Assist in unstopping sewer lines; operate sewer jet machine.
- Clean sewerage system according to a regular schedule of preventive maintenance.
- Perform tasks such as clearing drainage structures, ditches, or rights-of-way of debris.
- Service and clean equipment.
- Participate in tapping water and sewer lines, leak repair, and meter and meter box installation and repairs.
- Operate boring machines to install lines and services beneath pavement and sidewalks.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Minimum two (2) years of experience in construction, maintenance, or operations of a related field.
- Must have or have the ability to, within two (2) years of the date of hire, to receive and maintain a Class “C” Water Distribution and a Class “IlI” Wastewater license within five (5) years as issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).
- Knowledge of materials, maintenance practices, and equipment used in construction or Utilities operations.
- Must have sufficient strength and ability to use shovels, chainsaws, mowers, weed eaters, rakes, and various tools.
- Ability to drive multi-geared trucks safely and effectively
- Knowledge of and ability to follow safe work practices.
- Ability to read, write, communicate effectively and deal with the public, city employees, and contractors in a willing and courteous manner.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to lift and carry materials up to 100 lbs., bend, kneel, stoop, climb, and work outdoors in all weather conditions. Exposure to dust, noise, chemicals, and heavy equipment. Must be able to work in trenches and ditches and stand or walk for extended periods. Regular attendance including evenings, nights, weekends, and emergency call-ins required.
Working environment includes continuous outdoor work with frequent exposure to extreme and inclement weather conditions, disagreeable elements, and noise. Potential exposure to dust, chemicals, and mechanical hazards. Occasional exposure to moving traffic, confined spaces, loud noises, fumes, irritants, rodents, and insects. Typically works with crew but may occasionally be sent out alone to complete job tasks according to specific instructions.
