Position Summary
- The Modern Languages Department at SUNY Cortland invites applications for a tenure-track position in TESOL at the assistant professor level, beginning in September 2027. The Department offers majors and minors in Spanish and Teaching English as a Second Language; degrees leading to New York State teaching certification in Adolescence Education Spanish and K-12 Teaching English as a Second Language; and an M.S. Ed.

in Teaching English as a Second Language, delivered fully online and asynchronously. In addition, the Modern Languages Department offers courses in ASL, French, Italian, Spanish, Teaching English as a Second Language, and English for Academic Purposes to the campus community. The teaching load for a TESOL assistant professor is 3/3 (50% in person and 50% online, asynchronously). Appointment

Major Responsibilities
- Teaching undergraduate and master's courses such as second language methodology, second language writing, bilingual and multicultural education, and educational technology, some in person and some online;
Maintaining an active scholarship/research agenda;
Advising students;
Providing scheduled office hours and support to students outside of the classroom;
Engaging in service to the department, school, and university.

Functional and Supervisory Relationships
- Reports to the Department Chair. Works collaboratively with departmental faculty and staff.

Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. in TESOL or a closely related field (ABD will be considered with completion date prior to the start of the appointment). Demonstrated experience in using technology in teaching and learning. Excellent English language proficiency.

Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant teaching experience at the college level, including teaching online, asynchronous courses. Experience teaching ESL/EFL and second language writing in K-12 or college settings.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Graduate course work in linguistics and English grammar. Background in literacy education. Proficiency in a language other than English.
