Job Summary
The Department of Chemistry at Oregon State University (OSU) invites applications for an Instructor (0.60 FTE) and Advisor (0.40 FTE) position with a total FTE of 1.00. The instructional duties include upper-level physical, organic, analytical, or lower-level general chemistry classes. The advising role is to serve undergraduate students majoring in chemistry. The instructor appointment is 9-month, fixed-term, beginning September 16, 2026, and reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head, while the advising appointment is a 12-month, professional faculty position.
The teaching FTE is 60% and a renewable, fixed-term appointment with opportunities for advancement to Senior Instructor ranks, Professor of Teaching, and leadership roles at the department or university level. Teaching load aligns with comparable instructor roles in the department. Large-enrollment courses will include strong TA support. Instructors will also have access to existing course materials and will generally work within coordinated teaching teams.
In addition, OSU provides strong instructional support through the Center for Teaching and Learning, including faculty learning communities, workshops, consultations, and access to professional development funding.
The advising role is a 40% FTE appointment, and may provide opportunities for advancement to a higher advisor position and leadership roles at the department or university level. The Academic Advisor monitors student progress and engages the student in conversation around strategies and resources to enhance their academic experience and work to resolve experienced difficulties. They will also provide advice on retention and degree/qualification completion.
These advising efforts may include orientation/supporting student transitions, academic success strategies, goal identification, course and experiential learning planning, and career considerations for Oregon State University's diverse population of students. The Academic Advisor takes on some level of program and/or initiative coordination as part of their responsibilities. The workload follows the university's guidelines for academic advisors.

Position Expectations - Instructor
* Teach chemistry lectures and/or labs, lower and upper-level undergraduate courses
* Teach in-person and/or online courses
* Work collaboratively within teaching teams
* Use Learning Management Systems (e.g., Canvas, Blackboard)
* Manage and supervise Teaching Assistants (TAs) and Learning Assistants (LAs)
* Contribute to curriculum development and instructional innovation
Position Expectations - Advisor
* Advise students to support timely degree completion and align academics with career goals.
* Monitor academic progress for assigned undergraduate caseload.
* Conduct proactive outreach, especially to students from diverse backgrounds.
* Explain policies, procedures, and academic requirements to guide decision-making.
* Develop and deliver workshops on advising and student success topics.
* Stay current on policies and pursue ongoing professional development.
