- Purpose: Assist licensed staff in implementing an individualized education program (IEP); provide individualized and small‑group instruction to students with moderate to severe learning and/or physical disabilities; assist with student data collection.
- Minimum Qualifications: Associate’s degree or higher, or 72 quarter / 48 semester credits, or a passing score on a district‑approved assessment. Prior experience with special‑needs children is desirable.
- Assist in implementing developmental, academic, and life‑skills instructional programs for students with moderate to severe learning or physical disabilities, using individualized instructional techniques under licensed staff supervision.
- Work effectively with and respond to people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
- Exercise independent judgment in managing classroom operations consistent with district policies and instructional goals.
- Provide instruction in small‑group or one‑on‑one settings, adjusting lesson plans to meet IEP goals.
- Implement a behavior‑management program and assist students with behavior management, providing education on appropriate interpersonal actions and responding to discipline problems.
- Receive direction from an assigned licensed staff member; perform tasks within the scope of achieving IEP objectives.
- Provide supplemental practice through drills, activities, and learning strategies reinforced by licensed staff.
- Help students develop positive relationships with peers and adults; promote student safety and self‑confidence.
- Record and maintain accurate developmental data; confer with licensed staff to provide performance feedback.
- Supervise students inside and outside the classroom, such as on bus rides, playgrounds, or community job sites.
- Provide instruction in basic skills, behavior, communication, self‑help, motor, and academic skills, or other tasks as directed in the IEP.
- Assist with basic care tasks, including feeding, toileting, therapy, transportation, and other related needs, and with physical movement, lifting, carrying, and communication assistive devices.
- Work with students exhibiting challenging or aggressive behaviors, creatively problem‑solving using intervention strategies aligned with IEP goals.
- Assist licensed staff in training volunteers, professionals, and peer tutors to support the district educational plan.
- Attend in‑service and workshop training related to the assignment, such as Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI).
- Implement nursing protocols under a district nurse’s direction, including G‑Tube feeding, suction, tracheotomy care, catheterization, and other medical procedures.
- Perform minor medical and health procedures as requested, in line with state and district guidelines.
- Provide other related services as assigned.
- Perform duties courteously and efficiently to build confidence and enhance learning.
- Observe laws, district policies, and professional standards.
- Maintain effective relationships with school personnel, parents, students, and the public.
- Maintain punctuality and reliability in attendance and meeting deadlines.
