SCUBA Certification Evaluator Pool – Spring, Summer, and Fall 2026

The PAC Recreational SCUBA Program within the Physical Activities Course (PAC) Program, a part of the School of Exercise, Sport, and Health Sciences, in the College of Health at Oregon State University is seeking SCUBA Certification Evaluators. This is a part‑time, varied‑FTE, hourly, 12‑month professional faculty position.

Applications submitted to this recruitment pool are reviewed on an as‑needed basis. Qualified candidates will be contacted when positions become available throughout the academic year. Some appointments may be reviewed for renewal or transition to an instructional position on an annual basis at the discretion of the program Director. Scheduling for each term is determined in February for the Spring term, November for the Winter term, and beginning in May for the Fall term.

Incumbents will guide and evaluate students throughout the process of achieving certification through the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI). This includes providing supervision and instruction during pool sessions and open‑water dives, ensuring PADI ratio standards are met, and supporting student safety.

Key Responsibilities
  • 80% – Evaluation
    • Work directly with students, individually or in small groups, in pool sessions and open‑water dives.
    • Assist or independently run dive groups of 20+ students.
    • Modify assistance based on each student’s skill and comfort.
    • Evaluate each student’s skills to determine progression through the curriculum.
    • Enforce all safety rules at the pool and open‑water sites.
    • Guide students in proper dive planning for open‑water dives.
    • Drive/transport students and equipment to open‑water sites.
  • 20% – Equipment
    • Provide general equipment care and service (if certified).
    • Set up equipment prior to course meetings.
    • Wash, sanitize, and store equipment after use.
    • Help with inventory checks in/out.
    • Demonstrate equipment function and assist students with usage.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Current, valid PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor certification.
  • Professional liability insurance and good standing with PADI.
  • Current, valid Adult CPR, AED Essentials, First Aid, and oxygen provider certification.
  • Minimum 150 dives, including 20 in a professional supervisory position and 4 in the OSU SCUBA program.
  • Ability to manage small groups (≤ 6 students) and assist with large groups (up to 10 students).
  • Experience with night dives (≥ 10) and deep dives (≥ 10).
  • Ability to operate a full‑size truck with SCUBA equipment or a 12‑passenger van for students.
  • Current, valid DAN accident insurance.
  • Ability to provide own SCUBA equipment for OSU’s dive environment.
  • Designated as a critical or security‑sensitive position; must complete a criminal history check and a motor vehicle history check, meet driver licence requirements, and self‑report convictions per University Policy.
  • Must complete a sexual misconduct reference check, per University Policy 05‑010; offer contingent on satisfactory results.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to design, teach, and assess courses that support inclusive learning and promote equitable teaching practices.
Working Conditions / Schedule

Requires working nights and/or weekends. Travel with students to open‑water sites and overnight stays near dive sites are required. Some work is performed outdoors; weather and temperature extremes may occur.
