Job Summary:

Prepares all materials for laboratory experiments and lecture demonstrations for science courses taught at the Corvallis campus. Collaborates closely with science faculty to support their instructional needs. Ensures proper storage of chemicals and scientific equipment at the Corvallis Campus. Develops and implements procedures for hazardous waste/materials and chemical management, maintains an inventory of equipment, and carries out other duties associated with the safety and learning environment of these courses.

Essential Duties:
Prepares all materials for laboratory experiments and lecture demonstrations, and correctly setting up laboratory apparatus and setting out proper chemicals. Collaborates closely with science faculty to meet their instructional needs to support student learning and success. Updates laboratory setup sheets on a regular basis to reflect changes in laboratory equipment and procedures and provide advice to laboratory instructors in lab execution.

Uses instructor feedback to modify setup sheets to meet instructional needs. Closely coordinates with other instructional specialists in the division on the Albany campus to determine equipment needs for the Corvallis campus. Transports equipment to and from the Albany campus when needed. Maintains work areas in a clean and safe condition by storing chemicals in their proper place, regularly cleaning work area and instructional lab area, replacing and repairing broken equipment, and returning all materials and equipment to their proper place.

Regularly checks and maintains the following in good working condition: chemical spill kits, eyewash fountains, safety showers, fire blankets, first aid kits, fire extinguishers, scientific equipment, and other items in the department. Collaborates with instructional specialists on the Albany campus to develop and implement procedures for hazardous waste/materials and chemical management at the Corvallis campus when needed. Conducts monthly inventory of hazardous/general waste and annually inventories the chemical supply.

Researches and establishes guidelines for disposing and storing hazardous/general waste generated, expired chemicals, and the chemical supply. Continually updates knowledge of current regulations (DEQ,OSHA) on proper chemical storage and disposal. Acquires current information on hazardous materials and general chemical safety handling by keeping up with Materials Safety Data Sheets inventory and attending appropriate chemical training workshops. Establishes and maintains appropriate professional rapport with college Safety Coordinator and others affiliated with chemical safety.

Works in conjunction with instructional specialists on the Albany campus to purchase supplies and equipment needed for laboratory experiments and lecture demonstrations at the Corvallis campus. Assists science faculty in purchasing materials and supplies by locating suppliers, price quotes, and bid items. Prepares purchase orders for approval by the department chair. Monitors the condition of all laboratory and lecture rooms used by science faculty.

Makes end of term inspections and expedites maintenance and repairs as needed. Contacts facilities department for repairs and performs follow ups of those repairs, such as broken electrical outlets, leaky faucets, broken locks, etc. Inventories materials in storage areas and maintains records of the inventory. Arranges proper disposal of items no longer required or used by science faculty on the Corvallis campus.

Prepares and delivers reports at department meetings on the status of equipment, inventory of supplies, recommended purchases, and other information pertinent to the responsibilities of the position. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Skills and Abilities:

Physical ability to stand for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift and transport scientific equipment up to 40 pounds by themselves. Sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to set up and operate equipment. Requires normal hearing and speaking skills to communicate with staff and students. Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers and operate lab equipment. Seventy percent or more of the job duties require standing.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in college labs and stockroom environment with frequent contact with people. Considerable exposure to safety or health hazards. May be required to work after hours or for special weekend events. Position requires a personal vehicle to transport materials between Albany and Corvallis campuses.
