Applications will be considered throughout Spring and Fall Terms 2026.

Job Summary

The Contemplative Studies Initiative (CSI) program, a part of the College of Liberal Arts at Oregon State University, is inviting applications for multiple hourly Contemplative Instructor positions to teach CSI practices during the Spring and Fall Terms 2026. These are professional faculty positions. Instructors will teach contemplative practices and theory anchored in philosophical traditions and/or research-based principles for non‑academic, weekly or series‑based classes.

Disciplines and modalities include meditation, mindfulness, postural yoga, qigong, contemplative dance, centering prayer, and sacred chanting/music. This position is primarily for weekly postural yoga instructors, although other practice modalities may be considered. The position requires 2‑5 hours weekly and is not remote or hybrid. Applicants will be reviewed on an as‑needed basis; qualified candidates will be contacted when positions become available.

Key Responsibilities
  • Teach the practice, philosophy, and methods of a contemplative discipline in a format conducive to the scheduled sessions. Includes instructional design, class planning, and delivery to effectively meet the needs and abilities of the participants.
  • Greet clients, process purchase transactions, answer client questions, and share information about program and center activities.
  • Sweep floors, organize props, and contribute to a clean and welcoming space.
  • Follow practice center operating procedures: track student sign‑in, maintain attendance records, leave follow‑up notes for the administrative team, open and close the building for class sessions, arm/disarm the building, control lights, and secure assets. Communicate regularly with CSI staff about availability, new programming, absences, class scheduling, and client or community issues.
What You Will Need
  • 3+ years academic and/or personal/practical background in contemplative studies or a contemplative practice or tradition.
  • 2+ years in a contemplative teaching role.
  • Certifications and/or requisite trainings in a contemplative discipline.
  • For instructors teaching a physical discipline, current CPR / AED and First Aid certifications.
  • Exceptional and effective communication skills.
  • Sound decision‑making ability.
  • Ability to carefully observe both individual and group activity and effectively respond to a range of needs, abilities, and skill levels.
  • Ability to articulate and describe methods, philosophies, and relevant research connections in addition to guiding practices.

This position is designated as a critical or security‑sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05‑010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self‑report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
