Position summary:
This recruitment will fill one full‑time Temporary Biological Sciences Research Technician 1 position in the Department of Horticulture at Oregon State University. The incumbent will assist with laboratory, greenhouse, and field work in weed management for perennial horticultural crops, including Christmas trees, strawberries, caneberries, hazelnuts, blueberries, hops, cranberries, and ornamentals. The research group evaluates the efficacy and safety of weed management strategies for organic and conventional perennial cropping systems in Oregon.
- Field maintenance, organization, and cleaning (70% of time): follow protocols, coordinate with principal investigator to maintain field plots, perform irrigation, weeding, pruning, and operate machinery such as mowers and tractors.
- Data collection and curation (30% of time): record growth measurements, harvest data, pruning weights, biomass collection, and enter data into the appropriate database.
- Two years of college‑level courses in a biological science field (horticulture, crop science, soil science, botany & plant pathology, environmental sciences, forestry, or a similar field) or equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and attention‑to‑detail skills.
- Clear verbal and written communication skills.
- Prior experience operating farming equipment such as tractors and mowers.
- Proficiency with computers, especially Microsoft operating systems, for inputting field data.
- Valid driver’s license in state of residence, ability to drive a university vehicle, and successful completion of a motor‑vehicle history check.
