This recruitment will be used to fill a part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Student Technical Assistant position for the Department of Environmental and Molecular Toxicology (EMT) at Oregon State University (OSU). The Undergraduate Student Technical Assistant performs routine to complex technical tasks in support of research or administrative work which includes laboratory, greenhouse, field plot, data collection, simple analysis, or the care and maintenance of animals.

• Student will perform research on industrial hemp and cannabinoid quantitation and/or contaminants of importance to veterinary medicine/agriculture.
• This will include development of skills in analytical chemistry and use of instrumentation such as LC-MS/MS.
• Routine laboratory duties such as dishes and proper waste disposal will be part of the position as well.
• Work may include laboratory chemical extractions, data collection, or interpretive analysis.
• 10%:
  Sample preparation (log-in, grinding and weighing)
• 20%:
  Laboratory maintenance (e.g. washing dishes, stocking consumables, chemical inventory, prepping solutions and proper waste disposal)
• 30%:
  Carry out toxicology assays including extraction of plant/feed and animal blood/urine/fecal samples for assessment by HPLC or LC-MS/MS
• 40%:
  Processing/summary of data, including survey data, using instrument specific software, Microsoft and/or statistical programs and related work

Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study.

Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment.

Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard:

• High School student:
  Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program.
• Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term.
• Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*.
• Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term.
• Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*.

* International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

• Experience or classes in chemistry, biology, agricultural sciences and related fields is preferred, but not required.

Most work is done in a typical laboratory setting. Students will work around hazardous chemicals, dust from ground plant samples, or possible dirt and mold when handling samples.
