Research & Development Ink Chemist
The R&D chemist position is in HP’s imaging and printing business. The work focuses on the development of new ink formulations using empirical design and modeling methods. Our group designs and formulates inkjet printing inks and characterizes their print attributes and robustness. The project focuses on expanding ink attributes such as optical density and durability on various media and on optimizing new inks for drop formation and the printing process.
The role collaborates with printer component designers to implement system‑level changes that balance trade‑offs across components.
- Component development
- Formulation design (performance, manufacturing, regulatory guidelines)
- Print system characterization
- Cross‑functional/hub global team participation and leadership
- External supplier material co‑development and manufacturing
Ph.
D. in chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field with a deep understanding of fundamental chemical mechanisms.
- Pigment and dye chemistry
- Polymers in solution
- Organic and inorganic nanoparticle suspensions
- Interfacial and surface chemistry
- Proficiency in appropriate analytical instruments and data interpretation
- Wet chemistry or ink formulation experience
- Strong written and spoken communication skills
- Creative problem‑solving in a fast‑paced product development environment
- Effective collaboration with remote or cross‑disciplinary team members
- Demonstrated leadership, teamwork, interpersonal, communication, and technical skills
- Resourceful, creative, and flexible
- Fluency in English
- Programming skills
- Familiarity with printing technology and color science
- Formulation experience (a plus)
Pay range: $93,400 – $143,800 USD annually (United States). Additional compensation may include bonuses and/or equity.
