Position: Ebba Lab/ Student Hire

Position Summary

This recruitment is for a student research assistant (maximum of 24 hours per week during academic terms and a maximum of 40 hours per week during academic breaks) in a program investigating Phytophthora epidemiology and management, particularly species impacting woody horticultural crops and native forests, such as Phytophthora ramorum.

Responsibilities
  • Transfer and maintain plant pathogen cultures of fungi and oomycetes.
  • Inoculate plants and set up experiments.
  • Collect and enter data, maintain laboratory records.
  • Perform basic lab maintenance (dish washing, agar media preparation).
  • Perform greenhouse tasks (fertilizing, up‑potting).
  • Aide researchers in sample and data collection at remote field locations.
  • Depending on performance, may have opportunity to conduct an independent project.
Transferable Skill Development
  • Academic enrollment: high school, community college, or university, pursuing a degree or course of study.
  • Academic standing: must meet standing requirements; students on suspension ineligible.
  • Enrollment standards:
    • High‑school: regularly enrolled or home‑schooling.
    • Undergraduate/post‑baccalaureate: 6 credit hours/term.
    • Undergraduate international: 12 credit hours/term.
    • Graduate: 5 credit hours/term.
    • Graduate international: 9 credit hours/term.
Qualifications
  • Ability to closely follow directions, pay attention to detail, work independently without supervision, and communicate professionally.
  • Must be able to follow procedures, maintain sterile technique, and proper documentation.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Background or interest in plant pathology, botany, forest health, horticulture, soil science, or microbiology.
  • Interest in field and lab work including sterile technique and DNA extraction & PCR diagnostics.
Working Conditions
  • Work primarily in laboratory, research greenhouses, and office settings.
  • Field work involves rigorous hiking and sample collection in coastal forests of Oregon and California; may involve exposure to poison oak.
