Overview

Ocean, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences | Masters, is an interdisciplinary graduate program that delves into various aspects of the Earth system. It begins by providing students with a foundational understanding of mass and energy flow within the Earth system through a set of core courses. Afterward, students have the opportunity to specialize in specific concentration areas, including Atmospheric Sciences, Geophysics, and Oceanography, under the guidance of their program committee.

Concentrations
  • Atmospheric Sciences: students explore interdisciplinary nature, requiring a solid grasp of physics, chemistry, biology, math, and computational methods, with study of atmospheric processes and their impacts on climate and human health. Research methodologies include fieldwork, satellite data analysis, modeling, and lab work, to understand atmospheric phenomena on global and micro scales.
  • Geophysics: focuses on physical processes within and on Earth, including seismic, gravitational, and geothermal phenomena. Background in physics, mathematics, engineering, geology, or geophysics is preferred, with proficiency in differential equations and mathematical physics. Research opportunities span marine and continental geophysical problems, emphasizing experimental, applied, and theoretical aspects.
  • Oceanography: interdisciplinary study of biological, chemical, geological, and physical processes within the oceans. Specialize in geological oceanography (geological processes influencing the ocean) or physical oceanography (energy exchange, circulation, and other physical phenomena in the sea). Candidates should have a background in physics, mathematics, or engineering, with a keen interest in marine sciences and environmental conservation.
Outcomes

The program equips students with a comprehensive understanding of the interconnected systems of the Earth, including the atmosphere, oceans, and geophysical processes. Key skills include proficiency in scientific research methodologies, data analysis, modeling techniques, and an understanding of environmental interactions within the Earth system.

Target audience

The target audience includes individuals with a strong academic background in physical sciences or engineering, with a passion for environmental conservation and a desire to contribute to the sustainable management of Earth’s resources.

Prerequisites and admissions

Prerequisites vary by concentration but typically require foundational knowledge of physics, mathematics, and relevant sciences. Applicants are expected to have completed undergraduate degrees in related fields and demonstrate proficiency in core subjects such as differential equations, mathematical physics, and experimental methodologies. Applicants are often required to submit GRE scores as part of the application process, reflecting the academic rigor and research-focused nature of this program.
