Outreach Specialist – Adult Education
Promotes enrollment and retention of adult learners and other economically disadvantaged students into special programs offered through one of the District’s colleges and/or its learning partners. Participates in and implements activities that reach out to potential students using techniques such as speaking to community groups, organizing programs and events to enhance school readiness, and making direct contact with potential students.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Conducts college outreach by scheduling, coordinating, and presenting information to individuals and/or groups to provide general information about the college and adult education opportunities and specific program information to prospective students at local area continuation high schools, community organizations, on‑campus, and at off‑campus locations. Attends career fairs and other events to present information and distribute materials. Initiates communications with identified target populations to encourage prospective college students to apply to college.
- Provides prospective students information about general admissions, enrollment, assessment, and matriculation procedures. Verifies class enrollment status and conducts research to resolve problems. Assists with new student orientation and advising.
- Provides one‑on‑one support and follow‑up services to prospective and current students to promote retention and completion.
- Serves as liaison on behalf of the District and individual colleges to local adult schools, continuation schools, regional occupational programs, community organizations, local workforce development boards and similar governmental or social service agencies to build enrollment, specifically in noncredit/adult education courses and programs.
- Serves as the point person for event planning and facilitation. Participates in planning and conducting recruiting and outreach events that may include funding and in‑kind resource development activities. Follows up with arranging and facilitating college visitations, tours, and special presentations, often conducted in conjunction with evening and weekend events.
- Performs higher level data entry and use of complex software such as Banner, ARGOS, and SARS. Position requires higher level of security access to records.
- Organizes and maintains records and statistical data necessary for research and program development and evaluation, and reports to funding and grantor agencies.
- Assists with budget development activities by researching costs and proposing events and activities. Organizes, maintains, and monitors records of expenses.
- Assists with creating and publishing periodic bulletins, flyers, newsletters, certificates, and awards. Maintains adult education websites and various social media accounts.
- Trains, assigns, prioritizes, and reviews work of temporary employees.
- Receives demographic and academic data from schools and other resources, and identifies potential candidates for noncredit/adult education courses and programs.
- Keeps current with support services provided by the District and its colleges, as well as by outside agencies that can benefit adult education prospective and current students. Attends professional development related to serving adult education students.
- Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.
- Required to abide by all District policies and procedures including Board Policy 3050 – Code of Professional Ethics.
- Working knowledge of grant or state funded programs and resources encompassing adults and socially and economically disadvantaged students.
- Working knowledge of higher education certificate and degree requirements that can accommodate disadvantaged students.
- Working knowledge of services that can benefit adult education students.
- Knowledge of the social and cultural programs that can enhance student retention.
- Knowledge of funding sources and requirements, as well as the services that may be available to students from other agencies.
