Position: Laboratory Coordinator (Temporary)

The Laboratory Coordinator for Natural, Physical, and Health Science is a staff position of the university. The position requires working in the academic laboratory areas of biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, environmental science, and mathematics. The individual must be competent in setting up and performing laboratory experiments and understanding the techniques performed in the laboratory and the safety procedures required for carrying out experimentation.

The person must be responsible for supervising student workers, assisting in various laboratories, and helping students solve laboratory related problems. The individual must be a team player that is self‑motivated and able to work independently. This is a full time, temporary position.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs general laboratory duties; maintains and troubleshoots various laboratory instruments, trains laboratory assistants, as well as assists in the duties required for teaching and academic research.
  • Monitors student lab experiments, in group or classroom settings, and independent student research studies.
  • Provides teaching assistance for lecture and laboratory classes in collaboration with other faculty members.
  • Responsible for assisting research and experimental procedures in the sciences including streamlining various science experiments for faculty members.
  • Participates in development and implementation of academic course work, seminars, and other educational programs.
  • Utilize purchasing system, i.e., coordinates equipment inventory using both manual and computerized purchasing/inventory systems.
  • Assists in the organization of field studies course work (biology, upland field biology, earth science, coastal ecology, etc.). This includes maintenance of traveling supplies, supervision of students, driving for the various trips, and other tasks associated with science excursions (i.e., cooking, meal planning, maintain camping equipment, etc.).
  • Works collaboratively in a team‑oriented approach maintaining excellent rapport with other faculty, staff, and students; such as attending staff meetings and any other related staff functions.
  • Familiar with hazardous waste protocols, chemical hygiene, and biological safety.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Requires Bachelor’s degree with experience in the chemical, biological, and physical sciences.
  • Extensive knowledge of general laboratory duties, maintenance and troubleshooting of various laboratory instrumentation, training and supervision of appropriate laboratory personnel.
  • Must have the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, prioritize, and meet deadline dates when necessary; able to function as a self-starter.
  • Must have the ability to qualify for University Driving Insurance for various science excursions.
  • Ability to interface with all levels of the university faculty, staff, students, administration and external vendors.
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills in working with various groups within the Vanguard system, as well as external university research groups and private industry.
  • Knowledge of purchasing procedures in an academic setting.
  • Sincere interest in assisting each student within a diverse and multi‑cultural community to maximize their academic, spiritual, and personal potential.
  • Knowledge and acceptance of principles and philosophies of Vanguard University, its programs, and requirements.

SALARY

This is a temporary, non‑exempt, full‑time, benefit‑eligible position. Expected Pay Range: $23.00 - $24.00 per hour. Placement within the salary range is commensurate upon education and experience. Posted salary range reflects anticipated hiring scale for the position. Vanguard University also offers a generous benefits package.
