Program Overview
Federal Work-Study (FWS) is a U.S. Department of Education program that provides part‑time employment to students with significant financial need. The federal government pays a portion of the student’s salary; the college pays the remainder. The program is designed to allow students to gain work experience related to their field of study or develop new skills while balancing academic responsibilities.
ResponsibilitiesStudent Assistant I – Entry level / Semi‑skilled: Work is conducted under immediate supervision. Tasks are standardized, routine, and repetitive. The supervisor provides detailed instructions and oversees work flow and production levels.
Student Assistant II – Intermediate / Advanced: Work is conducted under general supervision. Responsibilities are less routine and require moderate independent judgment, analysis, and decision‑making. The supervisor sets objectives but allows flexibility in methods of completion. Knowledge of sophisticated data systems and confidentiality is required.
Student Assistant III – Specialist / Lead: Work is conducted under general supervision. Responsibilities involve a wide variety of advanced tasks requiring independent judgment and decision‑making. The assistant may direct the work of lower‑level student employees and must have at least two years of experience in the same assignment.
Qualifications- Education and Experience – Level I: Little or no prior experience or education required.
- Education and Experience – Level II: Some previous knowledge, experience, or education required.
- Education and Experience – Level III: Prior experience, education, or specialized skills required.
- Students must be enrolled in classes for the current semester and have been awarded federal work‑study through the financial aid office.
- Evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of community college students (california regulations and district EEO plan).
- Ability to perform job assignments as described.
- Limited independent judgment and decision‑making, varying by level.
- Ability to balance work and studies.
- Student assistants are at‑will employees, not part of the classified service, and do not receive benefits.
- Work hours:
- Fall and spring semesters: up to 19.5 hours per week.
- Winter intercession and summer (June–August) when enrolled: up to 28 hours per week; when not enrolled: up to 40 hours per week.
- No class session (e.g., spring break or between sessions): up to 40 hours per week.
- Regular attendance is required; poor attendance may result in termination.
- Position requires compliance with mandatory reporter policies (Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act, Title IX).
- Employment contingent upon verification of federal work‑study award, class schedule, background check, eligibility to work in the United States, and board approval.
- Complete online employment application.
- Attach current class schedule for the academic year Fall 2026 / Spring 2027 (PDF recommended).
- Attach federal work‑study award email (PDF recommended).
- Have fingerprints taken by a Live Scan computer (at the candidate’s expense) before first day of employment.
- Present original documents proving eligibility to work in the United States, including a Social Security Card.
- Participate in a new‑hire onboarding appointment with an Employment Services Representative.
