Position: .PT Faculty POOL - Theater Arts (Stage Costume)

Part‑time/Temporary Faculty

Coast Community College District offers part‑time, temporary faculty positions for adult students in transfer, general education and vocational programs. Applicants must reside within commuting distance to Orange County.

Responsibilities
  • Provide quality instruction according to established curriculum and course outlines.
  • Maintain a learning environment that encourages free discussion and critical thinking.
  • Maintain professional conduct and ethics.
  • Stay current in subject matter.
  • Fulfill all professional responsibilities of a part‑time faculty member.
  • Teach all scheduled classes and maintain accurate records.
  • Assignments may include day, evening, weekend, online and/or off‑campus classes.
Course Responsibilities
  • Introduction to costuming for theater, television, and film: cover topics such as history of costume, fabrics, sewing, wardrobe observations, color coordination, script analysis, and basic drawing.
  • Supervise students in design and construction of costumes for productions and contribute to the production wardrobe crew.
  • Demonstrate understanding of costume evolution, historical fashion periods, character evaluations, director/designer concepts, tools and equipment, pattern drafting, sketch interpretation, fabric calculation, design selection, sewing proficiency, and knowledge of fabric types.
  • Prepare written assignments including character charts, detailed descriptions, production reviews, and exams on costuming history and techniques.
  • Provide costume and/or make‑up design services on a show‑by‑show basis as an independent contractor (if requested).
  • Assignments may include day, evening, and weekend classes.
  • Qualifications
    Minimum Qualifications:
  • One of the following:
    • Valid California Community College instructor credential appropriate to subject, issued before July 1 1990.
    • Master’s degree or Master of Fine Arts in drama/theater arts/performance.
    • Bachelor’s degree in drama/theater/performance plus a Master’s in comparative literature, English, communication studies, speech, literature, or humanities.
    • Combination of education and experience equivalent to the above; equivalency application required.
  • Evidence of sensitivity to and ability to manage a diverse classroom environment and provide instruction to students from varied academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Desirable

    Qualifications:

    • Completed coursework in theater arts with emphasis in costume design/technical theater.
    • Practical experience in theater arts, especially at professional or college level.
    • Significant teaching experience with college‑level theater courses, preferably in costume design/technical theater.
    • Professional theater or dance community involvement.
    • Strong commitment to quality teaching and student success.
    • Broad knowledge of academic or occupational area and curriculum design across learning levels.
    • Ability to collaborate and work with diverse population.
    • Knowledge of current instructional technologies and integration capability.
    • Innovative, ethical, enthusiastic, and collaborative demeanor.
    Conditions of Employment
    • Employment is part‑time, temporary, contingent upon verification of employment history and background checks per California law.
    • Hours and effective date to be arranged with supervisor.
    • Part‑time faculty remain in the pool for one year.
    • Regular attendance is essential; inability may preclude continued employment.
    • The employee is a mandated reporter under California’s Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and must comply with District policies and Title IX.

    Salary

    Salary based on Lecture Hour Equivalent (LHE) per the current Part‑time Faculty Salary Schedule.
