What YOU Need
  • A bachelor’s degree in related field (i.e. education, special education, deaf studies, linguistics, psychology, communication disorders, or child development)
  • Education Specialist Credential:
    Deaf and Hard of Hearing
  • Communication

    Skills:

    Proficiency in communication methods used by students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively with students, teachers, and families.
  • Must possess sufficient technology skills to complete IEP documentation and communicate effectively via email.

Requirements Responsibilities
  • Teach language, literacy, math, and academic subjects.
  • Develop listening, spoken language, or ASL skills depending on each student’s communication mode.
  • Adapt curriculum to ensure students can access classroom instruction.
  • Teach self-advocacy and communication skills.
  • Conduct educational assessments.
  • Write IEP goals related to hearing loss and language development.
  • Participate in IEP meetings.
  • Monitor student progress and document services.
  • Collaborate with other service providers to ensure effective discharge planning and continuity of care.
  • Educate parents and families on treatment goals.
  • Document student progress and adjust care plans as necessary to meet evolving needs.
Required Skills

Skill in communicating verbally and in writing with students, faculty members, and parents so that all parties understand the program and the degree of progress being made. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Education and Experience

A Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.

Current

California Education Specialist Credential with a Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) authorization.
