Job Description
The Core Tax Services Senior Manager advises clients on the tax implications of their business activities, evaluates alternative actions to reduce tax burden and compliance cost, identifies compliant methods to meet tax regulations, and serves as the primary contact for complex tax matters. The role applies expertise to understand potential tax issues, communicate risks, and make top‑level decisions regarding filing, preparation, and resolution of questions from federal and state agencies.
Additionally, the Senior Manager is an active member of the office/region leadership team, participates in marketing, networking, and business development, and maintains client relationships.
- Tax Compliance – Ensure client compliance while minimizing tax and reporting burdens; review tax regulations and resolve client issues with specialists as needed.
- Research – Identify research needs, frame issues, train staff on research methodologies, and involve firm specialists where appropriate.
- ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals – Apply firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual; review prepared work papers and explain ASC 740 provisions to clients.
- Tax Consulting – Develop and recommend efficient methods to maximize client benefits, manage risk, and respond to federal and state agency inquiries.
- Tax Specialization – Build deep knowledge in one or more tax areas (e.g., corporate, state/local, international) and lead external CPE training or mentorship.
- Strategy Development – Introduce and implement new tax strategies, test innovative ideas, and present complex approaches to clients.
- Supervision – Oversee associates and senior associates, review their work, provide feedback, train them in software tools, and manage workloads.
- Other duties as required.
- Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.
- Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
- Eight (8) or more years of relevant tax experience, public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services required.
- Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties preferred.
- Prior supervisory experience required.
- CPA, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or IRS Enrolled Agent (EA) (or equivalent) required.
- Other relevant professional degrees or certifications preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software.
