Under occasional supervision, oversees and performs carpentry functions in District schools, ensuring compliance with applicable codes, specifications, schedules and standards. Supervises assigned crew members; reviews work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy. Reports to the Supervisor of Maintenance Services or Director of Maintenance Services.
Specific Duties and ResponsibilitiesEssential Functions
- Supervises the duties of assigned carpenters and trades workers. Supervisory duties include assigning, reviewing and planning work of others; maintaining standards; allocating personnel; selecting new employees; acting on employee problems; and recommending employee discipline as appropriate.
- Reviews the work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy and offers advice and assistance as needed.
- Supervises and conducts general carpentry work, including but not limited to constructing walls, installing drywall and trim; repairing doors and hardware; constructing cabinets, shelves and other custom fixtures; forming and pouring concrete; installing and repairing ceiling tile; installing carpet and floor tile; etc.
- Inspects work in progress and after completion to ensure compliance with applicable codes, specifications, standards and schedules.
- Estimates materials and labor for job assignments.
- Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, co-workers, subordinates, District administrators and staff, students, contractors, sales representatives, etc.
- Receives, reviews, prepares and/or submits various records and reports including work orders, diagrams, specifications, accident reports, performance appraisals, attendance records, daily reports, etc.
- Complies with all federal laws, state statutes, Board policies, administrative rules, and directives.
- Performs related duties as required.
Requires a vocational diploma in carpentry supplemented by four years of experience in carpentry or construction, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Minimum Qualifications and Standards RequiredPhysical Requirements
Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment, including a two-way radio, carpentry tools, hand and power tools, etc. Must be able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Physical demands are in excess of those of sedentary work;
work involves walking or standing for periods of time, stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, climbing, etc., and performing manual tasks. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of up to 100 pounds and work at heights of up to 30 feet.
Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
Interpersonal CommunicationsRequires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving assignments and/or directions to subordinates and receiving assignments and/or direction from supervisor.
Language AbilityRequires the ability to read a variety of codes, policies and procedures, equipment manuals, specifications, diagrams, etc. Requires the ability to prepare daily reports, performance appraisals, logs, etc., with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech. Requires the ability to speak with and before others with clarity, voice control and confidence.
IntelligenceRequires the ability to apply rational systems to solve practical problems, and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists and to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form.
