Plans, directs, and administers the operation of an alternative education school within federal, state, and district guidelines. The successful candidate must demonstrate a fundamental understanding of an alternative approach, possessing the willingness to step outside the traditional boundaries of their position to care for students. We are seeking an authentic leader who leads by example and closes the distance between the office and the classroom to foster a "family" environment among dedicated staff.
This position requires a strong leader who can set clear boundaries, hold others accountable, and manage healthy conflict while maintaining a culture of empathy and restorative justice.
This position requires deep expertise in alternative education philosophy and practices. The principal must analyze and offer creative solutions to issues as they arise, particularly for students who may be operating below grade level or dealing with trauma and poverty. The principal must be highly organized and consistent, serving as a primary person for behavior management, scheduling, and transcript evaluation. Frequent meetings with staff, community partners, and district personnel are essential to advocate for AKHS students and ensure they have full access to opportunities.
Specific responsibilities include the following:
- Serves as the instructional leader and operational manager with a hands‑on, leading‑by‑example style.
- Understands and supports experiential learning, including student trips and hands‑on opportunities.
- Directly manages systems related to transcripts and schedules, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
- Leads the school in restorative justice practices and PBIS, maintaining a strong but empathetic disciplinary environment.
- Appreciates and promotes pathways in natural resources, forestry, agriculture, and career technical education (CTE).
- Collaborates with staff in a way that respects their autonomy and dedication while actively pursuing and managing grants to support program development.
- Coordinates student and family assistance programs, demonstrating strong parental and family engagement skills.
- Ensures compliance with state laws and district goals with high levels of consistency.
- Builds and maintains critical community and industry partnerships to bring external expertise into the school.
Preference is given to candidates with significant experience in alternative education, restorative practices, and career‑connected learning. Experience with CTE, farming, or agricultural programs is highly desired.
Education and Licensure RequirementsMust hold or qualify for an Oregon Administrative License.
Salary Range and BenefitsThe district will provide a competitive salary for a 215‑day contract. Placement on the salary schedule is dependent on previous qualifications and experience. The district provides a generous benefits package in addition to the base salary.
