Job Description Substitute Registered Nurse (On-Call)School Year
Position SummarySouth Lane School District is seeking qualified Registered Nurses to serve as on-call Substitute School Nurses. This position provides nursing coverage when the District's School Nurse is absent and ensures that required nursing services continue without interruption. A primary responsibility of this role is providing nursing delegation and oversight to the District's Health Aides/Nursing Assistants in accordance with Oregon law, while supporting student health and safety across the district.
Assignments may range from a few hours to multiple days, depending on district needs.
Essential Functions- Provide school nursing services in accordance with Oregon laws, Oregon State Board of Nursing standards, and district procedures.
- Provide required nursing delegation, supervision, and consultation to Health Aides/Nursing Assistants when serving as the acting District School Nurse.
- Assess student health needs and provide appropriate nursing care.
- Review and implement student Health Management Plans and emergency care plans as needed.
- Consult with school administrators, staff, parents, and health care providers regarding student health concerns.
- Support medication administration and other delegated nursing procedures.
- Respond to student illnesses, injuries, and medical emergencies.
- Assist with communicable disease response and implementation of district health protocols.
- Participate in IEP and Section 504 meetings as needed during assignments.
- Provide health-related guidance and training to staff when appropriate.
- Maintain accurate health documentation and records.
- Collaborate with district administration and school staff to ensure continuity of student health services.
- Travel to schools throughout the district as needed.
- Maintain regular and reliable attendance for accepted substitute assignments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of Oregon school nursing practice, delegation requirements, and applicable laws.
- Ability to safely delegate nursing tasks to unlicensed assistive personnel in accordance with Oregon Board of Nursing regulations.
- Strong assessment, clinical judgment, and problem-solving skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to establish positive working relationships with students, families, staff, and community partners.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to utilize electronic health records and district data systems.
- Ability to travel between district schools as needed.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise professional judgment.
- Ability to physically perform assigned duties.
- Valid Oregon Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- Current CPR certification.
Preferred
- TSPC School Nurse endorsement.
- Previous school nursing experience.
- Minimum of one year of RN experience within the past five years preferred.
- Experience with nursing delegation and supervision of unlicensed assistive personnel is preferred.
Work is performed in school settings throughout South Lane School District. Duties require standing, walking, sitting, occasional lifting up to 40 pounds, and the use of computers and standard office equipment. Travel between district schools may be required. Occasional evening or weekend assignments are possible but uncommon.
ScheduleThis is an on-call substitute position. There is no guaranteed number of hours or assignments. Substitute nurses are contacted as needed to provide coverage for the District School Nurse or health aides.
