Transmission Planning Engineer

At ATC, we're powering communities by planning and building a reliable, forward-looking transmission system. As a Transmission Planning Engineer, you'll play a critical role in solving complex system challenges, influencing long-term grid strategy, and ensuring reliable energy delivery across our region.
In this role, you will evaluate the transmission system, identify future needs, and develop solutions that support reliability, compliance, and economic efficiency. You'll collaborate with internal teams, regional partners like MISO, and industry stakeholders to translate technical insights into meaningful system plans.
- Perform transmission planning studies to evaluate system performance and future needs
- Build, validate, and troubleshoot system models
- Apply FERC, NERC, and MISO standards to planning activities
- Define study methodologies, scenarios, and system drivers
- Develop and recommend cost-effective, reliable transmission solutions
- Partner cross-functionally to align on system needs and priorities
- Prepare clear, defensible technical recommendations and reports
- Support regulatory filings, stakeholder discussions, and planning documentation
- Strong understanding of power systems, including 3-phase AC theory and transmission operations
- Experience with power flow analysis and system modeling
- Ability to interpret and apply industry standards (FERC, NERC, MISO)
- Analytical mindset with strong problem-solving skills
- Ability to translate technical findings into clear, actionable insights
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Technology, Mathematics, or related field
- 2+ years of relevant experience (utility or power systems experience preferred)
- Familiarity with transmission system modeling tools, such as PROMOD
- Understanding of electric transmission systems and planning concepts
- Professional Engineer (PE) license a plus

The targeted base pay for this position is $96,000 to $112,000 annually.
