General Purpose
Performs a variety of entry level skilled duties related to the maintenance and repair of city sewer collection system.
Supervision ReceivedWorks under general supervision of the Street & Sewer Supervisor, Sewer System Operator III or II while in training or on a project-by-project basis.

Essential Functions- Sewer maintenance and repair: installs and maintains sewer collection system components; operates hand or power equipment (tapping machine, jackhammer, compactor, rodding machine, etc.); maintains irrigation systems; cleans ditches to ensure water flow; performs seasonal burning; clears obstructions from grates; constructs or improves channels.
- Maintenance of main lines: inspects lines for leaks or malfunctions; bolts leak-proof collars; seals joints; opens clogged lines with appropriate equipment; cleans lines and flushes; operates high-pressure line-cleaning equipment; may enter manholes to remove obstructions.
- Manhole work: conducts surveys, uses hand and power tools, replaces or resets grade rings to bring manholes to road grade; may act as a safety flagman during highway operations.
- System monitoring: travels routes to monitor line condition, records flow meter readings, removes debris; observes work by contract line installation/maintenance contractors; assists contractors in locating lines.
- Compliance and safety: observes connections to assure compliance with methods; may issue stop-work orders; monitors to prevent illegal connections, tampering, or dumping; initiates corrective actions per policy.
- Code compliance: inspects sewer lateral connections for Utah Plumbing Code compliance; issues stop-work orders for nonconforming connections; monitors to prevent illegal connections and initiates corrective action.
- TV and records: oversees operation and maintenance of televising equipment; provides training and maintains cleaning records and TV logs; submits reports and informs supervisor of maintenance needs based on TV results.
- Other duties: performs cleaning and inspection of sewer mains; may enter manholes to clear obstructions; performs related duties as required.
- Graduation from high school and one (1) year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Some knowledge of the collection system network, line and manhole locations; hazards and precautions of trench work and sewer line construction; sewer cleaning and televising equipment; safety standards for sewer line maintenance; hazards of heavy equipment operation; equipment maintenance and repair. Skill in operating heavy mechanized equipment as required by the position. Ability to operate heavy equipment under varying conditions; perform minor vehicle repairs;
perform heavy physical labor; develop and maintain effective working relationships; communicate effectively in writing and verbally; work from blueprints; tolerate weather extremes.
- Must become a Utah State Waste Water Collection System Operator Certification Level I within two test cycles.
- Must possess a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
- May be required to become HAZMAT certified.
- Must obtain Flagman Traffic Control Certification.
- Must be able to lift 50–75 pounds.
- Must be willing to work on-call duty and 24-hour standby.
- Tasks involve physical activity including walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching and lifting; frequent use of vision, hearing and manual dexterity; daily local travel may be required.
