Works directly with students (ages 17-21) at Iowa Educational Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired (IESBVI) providing support which encourages and develops independence.
This is a school year position.

* Reinforces and assists with Expanded Core Curriculum skills throughout the activities of the day.

* Provides on the job coaching and feedback in school and community settings.

* Prepares specialized learning activities or projects by developing or adapting, with the assistance of the supervisor, lesson or activity plans; uses a variety of techniques to improve students' skills.

* Interacts with students to arouse interest, stimulate participation, and encourage responses.

* Supervises students in class, between classes, during meal time, on transportation, and during recreation periods and field trips.

* Assists with behavior management issues, including relationship building and the use of specialized techniques to prevent, de-escalate and intervene in situations posing potentially harmful behaviors.

* Completes progress notes and other records; observes and assesses changes and accomplishments of students.

Hours:

School day hours.  May include hours outside the typical school day to facilitate job coaching in the community. Typically, Monday - Friday;
School-year position.  Schedule follows standard school calendar.  

A successful candidate will bring or have the ability and desire to learn:

* Knowledge of developmental stages of human, mental, physical, social, and emotional growth.

* Ability to adapt to specific learning capabilities or disabilities of the student.

* Ability to observe, record, and evaluate a variety of information and prepare related records and reports.

* Displays high stands of ethical conduct.

* Works and communicates with others to meet their needs in a polite, courteous, and cooperative manner.  

* Displays a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment towards completing assignments efficiently.  Works with minimal supervision.  Demonstrates responsible behavior and attention to detail.

DESIRABLE

QUALIFICATIONS:

* Experience working in a school environment.

* Experience working with disabled individuals.

* Experience or knowledge with the blind or visually impaired.

* Iowa Para educator Certification

any equivalent combination of the required experience and post high school education may be substituted on the basis that 30 semester hours or equivalent equals one year of experience.
