Job Description

Green Hills Area Education Agency is looking to fill a Mental Health School Social Worker position for the 2026‑2027 school year. This position is a 190 day contract.

Qualifications
  • M.S.W. degree from an accredited Council of Social Work Education school of social work.
  • Licensure through the Iowa Department of Health or equivalent from another state as recognized by the State of Iowa as a Licensed Independent Social Worker or a Licensed Masters Social Worker.
  • School Social Work Endorsement or Statement of Professional Recognition from the Iowa Department of Education.
  • Ability to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with professionals in other disciplines (e.g., teachers, mental health specialists, DHS personnel, other AEA professionals) to improve student success.
  • Assist in identifying learners having academic/social-emotional/behavioral/developmental difficulties that could lead to school failure.
  • Provide direct consultation, coaching, and modeling techniques and teaching strategies to AEA and LEA staff concerning student behaviors, learning style, and adoption of methods and materials.
  • Arrange, plan, and deliver appropriate agency‑approved activities, including professional development, as directed by Administration.
  • Implement and/or serve as a liaison for services to learners such as individual/group counseling, crisis intervention, behavior management strategies, and referrals to community agencies.
  • Use research in school practice by reading research literature, distributing and synthesizing findings, and conducting action research related to applied problems.
  • Administer, model, and interpret individual and systemic assessments.
  • Engage in consultation and collaboration with LEA, AEA, parents, medical, and community agencies.
  • Provide prevention and intervention strategies for the wellbeing of students.
  • Consult with school personnel and community professionals regarding significant social/emotional, cultural, or developmental needs related to the student’s school adjustment and emotional growth.
  • Assist teachers, parents, and students to understand dynamics affecting the student’s relationships.
  • Participate in coordination of services for children, families, and communities.
  • Facilitate working relationships among educators, parents, and community services.
  • Represent the AEA to enhance its reputation and build trust.
  • Participate in projects, committees, or activities to support the agency’s mission, goals, and priorities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements
  • Regular attendance required.
  • Ability to travel within assigned schools as needed.
  • Good eye/hand/finger coordination for keyboard and office machines.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Good concentration and visual skills.
  • Normal routine activity levels for bending, carrying, hearing, lifting, reaching, sitting, standing, vision, and walking; may involve above‑average activity at times.
