Job Description

Lewis Central Community School District is looking for dedicated Paraeducators to join our team for the 2026‑27 school year. These are full‑time, school‑year, hourly positions supporting students across a variety of grade levels and classroom settings.

Building and grade level placements will be determined during the interview process based on experience and district needs.

Summary

Primarily responsible for contributing to the social, emotional, vocational, and academic success of students by providing encouragement, support, assistance, and advocacy. This role involves working as a team member under the direct guidance of a licensed teacher or staff member and supervision of a building administrator to monitor and assist students during whole class instruction, independent work, and in other unstructured school settings while maintaining confidentiality and adhering to professional and ethical practices.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Report to work as scheduled on a regular and reliable basis.
  • Contribute to the social, emotional, vocational, and academic success of students.
  • Provide encouragement, support, assistance, and advocacy consistently for students.
  • Build and maintain professional relationships with students and co‑workers to include teachers, administrators, and other members of the student support team.
  • Monitor and assist students during whole class instruction, independent work under teacher direction, and other unstructured school settings.
  • Provide follow‑up practice and support in small groups or individually under teacher direction.
  • Monitor students in a variety of settings such as the cafeteria, bus loading area, playground, hallway, or other unstructured times.
  • Carry out behavior management plans developed by teachers and other professionals, including implementing student behavior plans and building‑wide expectations (like PBIS) if appropriately trained.
  • Support students by reading tests, scribing, and adapting tests under the direction of teachers.
  • Collect and record data regarding student social, behavioral, or academic performance as directed by the teacher.
  • Maintain confidentiality related to students at all times and follow all district policies and procedures.
  • Communicate absences with supervisors and check school email daily.
  • Complete all assigned paperwork (e.g., Medicaid documentation) consistently and in a timely manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Associate’s Degree and/or Para educator Certification through the Iowa BOEE is preferred.
  • 1–2 years working with children in a school or learning environment is preferred.
Hours / Schedule

All Para educator positions are scheduled for 8 hours per day (7.5 working hours and a ½ unpaid lunch break). This position is expected to work all student days; between 174 and 177 depending on whether you are assigned to an elementary or secondary building. Typically, the position would only be in attendance on the same days as students but may be asked to attend professional development sessions on non‑student days as well.

Daily attendance for this position is essential for the success of our students.
