Adjunct Instructor For OSHA-Authorized Training Programs

Iowa Western Community College's Continuing Education department is seeking an experienced industrial safety professional to serve as an Adjunct Instructor delivering OSHA-authorized training programs. The primary responsibility of this role is to teach OSHA-certified courses to working adults, apprentices, and industry professionals across construction and general industry settings. This is an excellent opportunity for a safety professional who is passionate about workforce development and adult education.

High-performing candidates will also have the opportunity to be trained and integrated into IWCC's LEAN instruction team.

Job Duties

OSHA-CERTIFIED COURSE INSTRUCTION

  • Deliver OSHA-authorized training including OSHA-10 and OSHA-30 courses for both Construction and General Industry.
  • Instruct additional OSHA-certified courses as assigned, including but not limited to:
    Hazard Communication, Lockout/Tagout, Fall Protection, Electrical Safety, Confined Space Entry, and Excavation Safety.
  • Facilitate engaging, scenario-based instruction that connects OSHA standards to real-world workplace safety practices.
  • Ensure all course content meets OSHA Outreach Training Program standards and requirements.
  • Stay current with OSHA regulations, updates, and best practices to deliver accurate and relevant training.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for occupational safety and health topics across multiple industries.
  • Assist learners in understanding compliance requirements and how to apply them in their workplaces.

CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTION

  • Develop and maintain course outlines, lesson plans, agendas, and instructional materials including presentations and handouts.
  • Evaluate student progress through assessments, participation, and practical demonstrations, providing constructive feedback.
  • Foster an inclusive and supportive classroom environment that encourages adult learner engagement and collaboration.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, performance, and course completion per OSHA Outreach and institutional requirements.
  • Ensure all instructional equipment, materials, and training props are well-maintained and ready for use.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to continuous curriculum improvement.

GENERAL

  • Travel to IWCC centers and off-site training locations as needed.
  • Demonstrate IWCC's core mission, vision, and values in all professional interactions.
  • Maintain prompt and reliable attendance.
  • Uphold strict confidentiality at all times.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

REQUIRED

  • OSHA Authorized Outreach Trainer status for Construction (OSHA-10 & 30) and/or General Industry (OSHA-10 & 30), or ability to obtain authorization prior to teaching.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in occupational safety, industrial safety, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA standards, regulations, and compliance requirements across construction and/or general industry.
  • Experience delivering training, instruction, or safety presentations to adult learners or working professionals.
  • Strong communication and facilitation skills with the ability to engage diverse adult learner populations.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and manage course logistics independently.
  • Ability to pass a background check, have a valid U.S. driver's license and good driving record.

PREFERRED

  • Active OSHA Authorized Outreach Trainer credentials for both Construction and General Industry.
  • Associate's degree or higher in Occupational Safety & Health, Industrial Technology, or a related field.
  • Professional certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional), CHST, or STSC.
  • Experience in curriculum development or adult education/training design.
  • Familiarity with LEAN principles, continuous improvement methodologies, or manufacturing operations.
  • Prior experience instructing in a community college, workforce development, or continuing education environment.
Physical Demands
  • Standing for extended periods while instructing or presenting.
  • Walking around training areas, including indoor classrooms and outdoor demonstration spaces.
  • Lifting and moving up to 30lbs of instructional equipment and training props (e.g., PPE, safety gear, demonstration materials).
  • Hands-on demonstration of PPE, safety equipment setup, and safe work practices.
  • Indoor and outdoor work settings, potentially in non-climate-controlled environments.
