We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Data Center Optical Engineer to support work within data center environments and co-locations. This role is responsible for ensuring the reliable installation, maintenance, and operation of optical transport infrastructure. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership, audit work quality, provide guidance to technicians, and maintain high standards of execution across optical fiber installations, migrations, remediation, break/fix activities, and remote hands services.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct daily audits of work performed within data center and co-location environments and provide immediate feedback to technicians.
- Interact directly with customers through ticketing systems or in person, providing clear and concise reports, updates, and technical communication.
- Assist with fiber installation, decommissioning, break/fix, remediation, and migration activities across data center optical and transport environments.
- Conduct and/or supervise optical testing and troubleshooting using tools such as optical power meters, stabilized light sources, visual fault locators (VFLs), optical time-domain reflectometers (OTDRs), and other applicable test equipment.
- Execute work by accurately interpreting and following Methods of Procedure (MoPs), engineering documentation, vendor documentation, and network diagrams.
- Read and interpret cut sheets and physical network design documents to ensure accurate port connections and proper cable management.
- 3+ years of experience working in data center operations or a similar technical environment with direct customer interaction.
- Experience leading teams or coordinating technical personnel.
- Ability to multitask, remain composed under pressure, and adapt within fast-paced, high-availability environments.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for customer-facing interactions.
- Excellent organizational, administrative, and documentation skills using customer applications and Microsoft Office tools.
- Hands-on experience with connectorized fiber optic cable installation, including single-mode and multi-mode fiber, LC connectors, fan-outs, and structured cabling systems.
- Demonstrated experience performing optical testing and troubleshooting within transport environments.
- Commitment to safety standards, quality requirements, and operational best practices.
- Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work at heights and within varying environmental conditions.
- Ability to support on-site activities within required service-level timelines and scheduled appointments.
- Availability to work in designated market areas and travel between work sites as required.
- Ability to utilize required mobile devices, laptops, and technical tools necessary to perform job responsibilities.
