Job Summary

Location:

Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital, 933 EPierce St, Council Bluffs, IA.

Work Schedule:

Casual – must provide a minimum of five to six (5–6) 12‑hour on‑call shifts per month, equating to approximately 60–72 on‑call hours monthly.

Responsibilities

Provide appropriate care tailored to the age and population of patients, ensuring understanding and comfort relative to treatment plans.

Perform initial and ongoing assessments to determine a patient's nursing care needs, prioritize data collection, and use findings in discharge planning; complete sexual assault victims’ needs evaluations and forensic examinations.

Develop, review, and revise individualized care plans to address patient nursing needs, collaborate with physicians and other disciplines, provide patient education, and offer emotional support and crisis intervention for sexual assault victims and their families.

Implement interventions in line with the care plan, follow nursing protocols and standards, administer medication safely, manage minor injuries, and provide STD and pregnancy risk evaluation.

Evaluate patient response to care, document outcomes, assess limitations, provide shift reports, and comply with subpoenas regarding examinations.

Perform technical skills independently, learn new skills and equipment, ensure safe technique, and maintain accurate charges for supplies.

Maintain professional behavior, participate in meetings, engage in performance improvement activities, and assist in restocking supplies and maintaining a clean environment.

Initiate actions to correct, prevent, or minimize risk to patient, family, or employees, complete appropriate incident and maintenance reports, follow infection control guidelines, and coordinate with emergency and law‑enforcement personnel.

Review, delegate, and evaluate staff utilization according to the Nurse Practice Act and professional standards of practice.

Participate in an on‑call schedule to assure 24‑hour Forensic RN Examiner availability.

Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited school of nursing preferred; graduation from an accredited nursing program required.
Experience:

Minimum two years in a related clinical area (ED, OB, or Women’s Health preferred).
Licenses/Certifications:

Current valid Registered Nurse (RN) license;
American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) strongly preferred at hire and required within three months.
Core certification related to a specialty area within one year of eligibility preferred.
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:
Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to multi‑task, prioritize, and use required computer systems.

Physical Requirements

Medium weight demands:
Exert up to 50pounds.
Tasks:
Climbing, crawling, kneeling, sitting, balancing, carrying, crouching, typing, lifting, pulling, pushing, repetitive motions, stooping/bending, twisting.
Continuous tasks:
Grasping, hearing, reaching, seeing, speaking, standing, walking.

Job Hazards

Electrical shock/ static.
Radiation: X‑ray, CT, Gamma Knife, non‑ionizing UV/visible light.
Physical hazards: noise, temperature, lighting, wet floors, sharps.
Hazardous drugs and chemicals: explosives, toxic, corrosive, flammable, latex.
Biological agents: primary airborne and blood‑borne viruses.
