Position: Registered Nurse - Surgery/Operating Room - Full Time - Days

Job Summary

Location:

Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital, 933 E Pierce St, Council Bluffs, IA.

Work Schedule:

4‑10 hour shifts Monday‑Friday, rotating call for evenings, holidays and weekends.

Accountable for the delivery of quality care to patients and families according to the individualized needs of the patient.

Responsibilities
  • Provide appropriate care specific to the age of the patient to ensure understanding and comfort with treatment as outlined in the Population Specific Criteria.
  • Identify opportunities for and provide individualized customer service and patient care according to patient needs.
  • Perform an initial and ongoing assessment to determine the assigned patient’s nursing care needs.
  • Include data from the patient or significant others in the assessment as appropriate.
  • Prioritize data collection according to patient’s immediate needs.
  • Use assessment findings in discharge planning.
  • Develop, review, and individualize the plan of care to address the patient’s nursing care needs for optimum outcomes.
  • Collaborate with providers and other clinical disciplines as appropriate.
  • Provide teaching specific to the patient’s health care problem.
  • Reflect continuous care needs and referrals for discharge or transfer in the care plan.
  • Implement interventions consistent with the established plan of care safely and appropriately.
  • Follow nursing protocols and standards of care for the unit.
  • Apply current knowledge in nursing practice based on standards and research literature.
  • Evaluate patient care to determine response to interventions for optimal outcomes.
  • Monitor outcomes and document patient response to interventions.
  • Assess the patient’s capabilities and limitations related to nursing and medical interventions.
  • Continuously monitor the patient and significant others’ ability to manage care needs after dismissal.
  • Provide complete verbal or written change‑of‑shift reports to the incoming provider, including SBAR content and familiarity with the overall plan of care.
  • Recognize and address patient and family capabilities and limitations (physical and mental).
  • Perform technical skills competently and independently to assure patient safety.
  • Commit to learning new skills and equipment within specified areas and time frames.
  • Demonstrate correct and safe technique in the use of equipment according to product information and policy manuals.
  • Follow procedures for obtaining, returning, cleaning, or disposing of equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain a professional attitude, demeanor, and behavior to achieve the organization’s mission.
  • Communicate effectively to solve problems at the personal and unit level.
  • Work with other health professionals, ancillary staff, patients, and families in a professional manner.
  • Take pride in the unit by actively participating in restocking and maintaining a clean environment.
  • Maintain a professional appearance, behavior, and work environment.
  • Maintain competence within the area of experience.
  • Participate in meetings and/or committees as needed to assist in decision‑making that affects the area, unit, or organization.
  • Initiate action to correct, prevent, and minimize risk to patient, family, or hospital employees.
  • Complete appropriate reports for any risk, including variance, incident, or maintenance requests.
  • Communicate unresolved issues to appropriate personnel.
  • Work within the scope of practice as defined by the State Nurse Practice Act.
  • Observe precautions when administering hazardous medications or handling excreta from patients who have received hazardous medications.
  • Delegate, evaluate, and plan for appropriate utilization of staff at all levels of practice in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act and professional standards.
  • Ensure tasks are performed by the right person, with clear communication and appropriate feedback.
  • Account for fiscal responsibilities and accurate charge of supplies and equipment.
