Job Summary

Location:

Methodist Jennie Edmundson Emergency Department, 33 E Pierce Street, Council Bluffs, IA.

Schedule:

Rotating 12‑hour shifts (Mon–Sat, weekends and holidays). Shift options include 9am‑9pm or 12pm‑12am, with at least one shift per month required. Casual/PRN staff work on an as‑needed basis and may have varying work days/hours from week to week.

Responsibilities
  • Perform primary health care for patients using assessment and diagnostic processes.
  • Obtain patient history, conduct physical examinations, and determine mental status.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized treatment, follow‑up, and care plans.
  • Collaborate with physicians and interdisciplinary teams, providing consistent feedback.
  • Order and perform appropriate ancillary and diagnostic tests, recording findings accurately.
  • Provide telephone triage, assess patient condition, and schedule appointments as needed.
  • Apply therapeutic interventions safely and in accordance with the plan of care.
  • Administer medications and immunizations following protocols and physician oversight.
  • Prescribe medications in compliance with DEA regulations.
  • Initiate referrals to relevant services to advance diagnosis or care progression.
  • Evaluate patient response to interventions and modify care plans for optimal outcomes.
  • Provide patient and family education using adult learning principles, ensuring understanding and readiness for follow‑up.
  • Maintain a professional appearance, demeanor, and communication style with all stakeholders.
  • Identify risks to patient, family, or staff, take corrective action, and report unresolved issues.
  • Serve as a role model and reliable resource, participating in meetings, research projects, and professional organizations.
  • Document complete patient records, interventions, consultations, and outcome data.
  • Engage in performance improvement, outcome management, and patient satisfaction initiatives.
Requirements Education
  • Graduate of an accredited Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program.
  • Must have completed an accredited Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) program.
  • NIH Stroke Scale training required at hire or within six months.
Experience
  • Prior experience in an emergency environment preferred.
License / Certifications
  • Current valid Registered Nurse (RN) license (compact multi‑state license acceptable) or provisional permit while awaiting licensure.
  • Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP‑IA) required.
  • American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) at hire; required within three months.
  • Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification required.
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required.
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) required within the first year.
  • Ongoing completion of continuing medical education (CME) to maintain ARNP licensure.
Skills / Knowledge / Abilities
  • Strong leadership, problem‑solving, and clinical judgment.
  • Effective communication with physicians, staff, patients, and families.
  • Proficiency in patient education and counseling.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to exert up to 50pounds of force and perform frequent standing, walking, lifting, climbing, and kneeling.
  • Occasional flexibility for tasks such as crawling, crouching, and visual tasks involving distinction of colors.
