Job Summary
Location:
Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital, 933
E. Pierce St., Council Bluffs, IA.
Work schedule:
Casual/PTO/FMLA coverage, Monday–Friday 7:30AM to 4PM (hours may vary weekly). The Nurse Navigator is accountable for delivering quality patient and family care throughout the cancer continuum, guiding individuals in informed decision‑making and coordinating multidisciplinary services.
- Provide age‑appropriate care, ensuring patients and families understand and feel comfortable with treatment plans.
- Perform initial and ongoing assessments; integrate data from patients and significant others to determine needs.
- Develop, review, and individualize care plans to achieve optimal outcomes; collaborate with providers and other disciplines.
- Implement interventions consistent with established care plans, following nursing protocols and current research.
- Perform technical nursing skills competently and independently, continually learning new techniques and equipment.
- Maintain a professional demeanor, communicate effectively, and participate in meetings and committees.
- Identify and act to prevent or mitigate risks; complete and report incidents and variances.
- Coordinate the weekly clinic schedule, organize physician and patient needs, update the EMR, and schedule ancillary testing and surgical procedures.
- Administer psychosocial distress screening; refer patients to supportive services within and outside the cancer center.
- Provide pre‑operative education and individualized strategies for patients and families.
- Facilitate planning and education about diagnosis, treatment options, clinical trials, and prevention guidelines.
- Enroll patients in Expectation Management and Medical Information (EMMI) program; plan and coordinate referrals to oncology services.
- Support interdisciplinary treatment planning conferences; record discussions and communicate plans to all providers.
- Teach patients and families about cancer prevention, screening, and survivorship planning.
- Promote patient safety by ensuring compliance with Joint Commission goals and monitoring environmental safety.
- Participate in quality measurement, improvement activities, and accreditation preparations; present findings to committees.
- Assist in community outreach and promotion of cancer services.
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program;
Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred. - Minimum 2 years of nursing experience with previous ambulatory coordination experience required.
- Current valid Registered Nurse (RN) license; valid compact multi‑state license or temporary permit while awaiting licensure.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross strongly preferred at hire; required within 3 months.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required within 3 months of hire.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact with patients, families, and staff.
- Ability to multi‑task, prioritize tasks, and solve problems critically.
- Proficiency with computer systems and hospital information systems.
- Exert up to 50lb.
- Activities may include climbing, crawling, kneeling, sitting, balancing, carrying, reaching, standing, walking, repetitive motions, typing, and handling equipment.
