RN's must pass a formal exam during orientation. It is an open-book exam based on skills learned, with all necessary resources provided. A minimum score of 90% is required to pass. Failure to achieve this score will result in termination. Candidates must adhere to a radius rule of 50 miles. Candidates may not be full-time, part-time, or PRN with any associated facilities.
A driver's license is required for identification purposes. Artificial nails are prohibited in all departments providing patient care. Refusal to remove artificial nails will lead to termination. The unit has a capacity of 22 beds with a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4. Common diagnoses include heart failure, atrial fibrillation, respiratory distress, and stroke. RNs are required to titrate drips, including Cardizem, amiodarone, and nitroglycerin.
There is a Charge Nurse on each shift who takes a full patient assignment. Patient care techs are present with a ratio of 1:10. RNs will troubleshoot CPAP equipment as needed. RNs must read and interpret telemonitor strips. Shifts are from 0630 to 1900 and 1830 to 0700 with cyclic scheduling. Weekend requirements are every other weekend, and holiday requirements include one major and one minor holiday.
Floating to ICU is required if appropriate and the nurse has experience. Unit-specific orientation consists of one 12-hour shift. This is a fast-paced unit with many admits and discharges. Attributes that contribute to success in this department include a positive attitude, teamwork, and a patient-oriented focus. Requests for time off must be submitted upfront as additional requests will not be approved.
Shifts may be canceled by the hospital up to four times for 13-week assignments. The charting system used is EPIC.
