Description
Iowa Western Community College seeks a full‑time assistant cheerleading coach who will provide a visible positive presence to promote school spirit at all home athletic events. The position fosters a connection with the squad, the athletic teams, and their visiting families during the season. The assistant coach assists with tryouts, pre‑season training, all games, practice and workouts, and with events planned by the spirit coordinator and residence life.
The assistant coach will also help manage the mascot team and coordinate events with campus departments to enhance publicity. The assistant coach will actively travel and recruit throughout the year for the 2027‑2028 season. This is a full‑time, 12‑month staff position with evening and weekend hours required. The position reports to the Spirit Coordinator/Head Cheer Coach.
- Actively participate in all college activities which lead to student recruitment, retention, and completion.
- Serve as co‑sponsor and assistant to the Head Coach for the Iowa Western Cheerleaders.
- Promote a spirit of cooperation and collaboration between the cheerleaders and Iowa Western Athletics.
- Assist with marketing the cheer program to the public through community service and by maintaining the cheerleading website.
- Assist with recruiting cheerleader candidates, including visiting and communicating with regional and national high schools.
- Conduct tryouts/auditions to select new members of the squad.
- Coordinate fundraising activities.
- Maintain and inventory supplies and uniforms, placing orders as needed.
- Coordinate participation in cheerleading camps, including summer camps.
- Coordinate participation in competitions, including all choreography, music, travel arrangements and supplies.
- Prepare, organize, and attend practices, games, performances, appearances, competitions, and off‑season training.
- Provide coaching services and professional support at all events, traveling with the squad to and from events as needed.
- Ensure the health and safety of the cheerleaders and participants per established policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Collaborate with athletic trainer(s) to set expectations for nutrition and conditioning for the squad.
- Assist with day‑to‑day operations by the Spirit Coordinator and Residence Life.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Coach and the Athletic Director.
- Uphold the Athletics Code of Conduct.
- Maintain and update rosters and emergency contact information for all team members.
- Create and teach proper conditioning warm‑ups and cool‑downs for practices, games, and competitions.
- Possess excellent writing and public speaking skills.
- Adapt to new and innovative situations.
- Handle multiple tasks with attention to detail.
- Be able to perform Head Coach duties on an emergency basis.
- Assist the Head Coach in all aspects of the cheerleading and mascot programs.
- Encourage high academic standards by discussing course grades with student‑athletes.
- Coordinate travel, including ground/air transportation, lodging and meals for selected games and events.
- Assist in national competition planning when the program is capable.
- Represent the school and program in a manner that supports the college’s mission on speaking engagements, clinics, development efforts and community‑relations programs.
- Associate’s degree or equivalent required.
- Experience coaching/playing at the college level required.
- Ability to pass a background check.
- Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
- Positive attitude.
- Maintain strict confidentiality at all times.
- Self‑starter with ability to work with little or no direct supervision.
- Regular, prompt and reliable attendance.
- Heavy work: lift 30–50 lb.
- Very heavy work: lift over 50 lb.
- Work routinely performed in an outdoor environment.
- Requires prolonged standing, frequent bending, stooping or stretching.
- Requires lifting and operating soccer equipment.
- Work routinely outside in a variety of environmental conditions both on and off the field.
- Frequent contact with students.
- Requires eye‑hand coordination and manual dexterity; ability to distinguish letters or symbols.
- Requires use of office equipment such as computer terminals, calculator, telephone, faxes, and copiers.
- Ability to drive company‑owned or personal vehicle.
