The primary responsibilities of the School Police Officer shall be to:
  • Decrease the number and scope of criminal offenses committed in and around school and to maintain a safe and secure environment conducive to learning.
  • Establish a liaison with school personnel to prevent crime and disruptive or violent behavior in the school and on school property.
  • Serve as a police presence on campus and handle the initial response for all police related matters until jurisdiction is determined in compliance with existing MOUs.
  • Provide educational programs and activities which will increase the safety and security of students and staff and increase students' knowledge of and respect for law enforcement agencies.
  • Develop a rapport with students, parents, and school personnel.

The School Police Officer shall be armed with a firearm and shall have the same power to arrest as the police of the municipality wherein the school property is located, pursuant to 24 P.S. 13‑1302‑C.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Maintain a visible police presence on campus and within school buildings by conducting routine patrols on foot and by vehicle.
  • Respond to calls such as disturbances, burglar alarms, traffic accidents, requests for backup of other law enforcement officers, medical emergencies and other incidents. Then determine proper response procedure and take appropriate action, including scene preservation, evidence collection, rendering first aid, maintaining order, conducting interviews and any other aspects of police response.
  • Investigate criminal and traffic law violations and respond to police related incidents occurring in the school or on school property.
  • Author and process reports and other correspondence such as accident reports, investigative reports, supplemental reports, arrest reports, citations and other similar police documents. Officers shall also ensure reports contain necessary data, are thorough, accurate, and complete; and that reports are properly forwarded for review.
  • Conduct traffic related duties such as setting up vehicle and pedestrian traffic areas, directing traffic, monitoring for and eliminating traffic hazards and monitoring campus parking lots for violations. When appropriate take enforcement action under district policies and procedures.
  • Testify in court, including preparing for and presenting cases. This includes presenting evidence, preparing and calling witnesses, providing testimony and conducting cross examinations.
  • Attend all assigned training programs and remain certified in required elements including, but not limited to, CPR/FA, MPOETC Updates and Firearms Qualifications.
  • Formulate and provide educational programs on school safety and crime prevention.
  • Teach students about their rights and responsibilities as lawful citizens and serve as a positive role model and mentor for the students.
  • Perform duties of a law enforcement officer as required, including, but not limited to, interpreting laws and statutes of the Commonwealth, pursuing suspects, when necessary, using agency firearms and other self‑defense devices; using equipment in conjunction with law enforcement duties; responding to emergencies, civil disorders, and disasters; and performing rescue functions.
