Job Description

Supervisory Assistant

Reports to:

Building Principal

Primary Functions

Assist Building Principal in the supervision of cafeteria, classroom, auditorium, playyard, hallways or other areas where supervision of students is required to insure smooth functioning of the school.

Position Requirements
  • Minimum Qualification for Non-Instructional Paraprofessionals as required by State and Federal Law
  • High school diploma or general equivalency (GED)
  • Successful completion of a Paraprofessional Training Program approved by the Rhode Island Department of Education.
  • Certification as a Paraprofessional in another state
  • Hold an associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree and completed the Parapro course (no test required) or other training consistent with the RI State Standards
Other Qualifications
  • Ability to exercise supervision of individual students or groups according to the directions of the Principal.
  • Ability to assist students in their personal needs
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, students, supervisors and the general public
  • Ability to make responsible decisions according to guidelines and directions of the Principal
  • Must be an employee in good standing including attendance, professionalism and evaluation
Essential Functions of the Job
  • Must be able to intermittently walk, sit, stand and stoop
  • Must be able to occasionally lift between 5 and 10 lbs
  • Must be able to work outdoors and in different temperature environments
  • Must have good verbal communication skills
  • Must be able to work in a busy and noisy environment
  • Must be able to understand and follow oral and written directions
  • Must be able to work effectively in a team environment
  • Must be able to follow safety instructions
Responsibilities and Duties
  • Exercise supervision over students in classroom, lavatory, cafeteria, auditorium or play area.
  • Within the guidelines established by the building Principal, initiate the process for correction of student misbehavior.
  • Within the guidelines established by the building Principal, organize lunch and recess activities, bringing students into lines to begin recess and facilitate orderly return to classroom.
  • Actively supervise lunch, recess and other supervisory times by interacting, roaming and consistently scanning the supervision area. While supervising, SAs should be on the lookout for students needing assistance to be included in games or interacting with others.
  • Assist students with personal needs, solving problems and conflict resolution.
  • Document minor and office referral incidents using a system as directed by the Principal.
  • Immediately communicate serious health and safety concerns to the Principal and/or the school nurse.
  • Maintain a cooperative staff relationship with all personnel functioning within the educational setting.
  • Within reason and the broad framework of this job description, Supervisory Assistant will perform other tasks as directed by the Building Principal.
  • Terms and Conditions

    Ten (10) month position with salary, benefits and hours of work to be in accordance with Collective Bargaining Agreement.
