- Master’s degree in Social Work from a regionally accredited institution
- Demonstration of meeting the content competencies as prescribed by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW)
- Licensed as a Clinical Social Worker by RI Board of Registration for Social Workers
Valid for assignment as a School Social Worker in grades PK-12 in RI Public Schools
FunctionSchool Social Workers are an integral link between school, home, and community in helping students achieve academic success. They work directly with school administrations as well as students and families, providing leadership in forming school discipline policies, mental health intervention, crisis management, and support services.
Scope of Work- Provide evidence based education, behavior, and mental health services
- Promote a school climate and culture conducive to student learning and teaching excellence
- Maximize access to school-based and community-based resources
- Participating in special education evaluation meetings as well as IEP meetings.
- Preparing a social history on a child as part of the special education evaluation process.
- Counseling (group or individual based on IEP goals or whole class education.)
- General education support - short term counseling, check‑ins and then a referral for outpatient services if more intense or long term need.
- Mobilizing family, school, and community resources to enable the child to learn as effectively as possible in his or her educational program.
- Assisting in developing positive behavioral intervention strategies.
- Providing crisis intervention.
- Developing intervention strategies to increase academic success.
- Assisting with conflict resolution and mediation.
- Helping the child develop appropriate social interaction skills.
- Assisting the child in understanding and accepting self and others.
- Working with parents to facilitate their support in their children's school adjustment.
- Assisting parents to access programs available to students with special needs.
- Assisting parents in accessing and utilizing school and community resources.
- Providing staff with essential information to better understand factors affecting a student’s performance and behavior.
- Assessing students with mental health concerns.
- Developing staff in‑service training programs.
- Assisting teachers with behavior management.
- Providing short‑term direct support to staff and resources to more long‑term specialized counseling services.
- Obtaining and coordinating community resources to meet students' needs.
- Helping school districts receive adequate support from social and mental health agencies.
- Advocating for new and improved community/school service to meet the needs of students and families.
- Helping the system respond effectively to each child's needs.
- Assist in developing and implementing educational programs for exceptional children.
- Help develop alternative programs for students with attendance concerns.
- Identifying and reporting child abuse and neglect.
- Providing consultation regarding school law and school policy including IDEA and Section 504.
- Providing case management for students and families requiring multiple resources.
Full‑time
Job Requirements- Must be an employee in good standing including attendance, professionalism and evaluation.
- Employment is contingent upon successful completion of all state and federal background checks.
- Compliance with Rhode Island Department of Education requirements.
- At least 3 year(s) of relevant experience preferred.
- Bachelor degree preferred.
