Maintenance Worker I - PT
The City of Covina is now accepting applications for the position of Maintenance Worker I - PT in the Public Works Department.
This is a part time position;
Part time positions have a typical work schedule of an average of 20 hours per week. There is no guarantee of hours per week.
DEFINITION:
Under general supervision, performs a variety of unskilled routine or semi-skilled maintenance work, and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, repair, maintenance, and replacement of City infrastructure and related systems; operates trucks, equipment, power and hand tools; demonstrates an understanding of all applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties, performs other related duties as required relative to assigned area of responsibility.
Incumbents are assigned to one of three areas in the Streets Division:
Streets and Tree Maintenance, Hardscape and Special Projects, or Sewer Maintenance and may be rotated through the assignments at the supervisor's discretion.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Maintenance Worker I is the entry level position in the Maintenance Worker series. This class is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to employees. Since this class is typically an unskilled class, employees may have only limited or no direct related work experience.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:
Receives general supervision from higher level operations staff.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
(include but are not limited to the following)
- Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew or may work individually; on occasion, including asphalt/concrete, storm drain maintenance, sewer maintenance, general right-of-way clean up, maintenance, landscaping and tree trimming and removal as needed.
- Operates a pneumatic power construction and maintenance equipment used in street maintenance and repair, loads, hauls and unloads equipment, gravel, sand and materials.
- Performs routine inspection on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment.
- Observes safe work methods, policies and procedures and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.
- Maintains work area, chemical storage area, and equipment in a condition that complies with established safety practices and Cal-OSHA.
- Assists in cleaning and repair work on storm drains, streets, curbs, gutters, aprons and alleys and paints curbs, MUTCD markings, striping lines and other painting as required; put in sub-grades; digs and retrenches and compacts earth.
- In accordance with American Public Works Association (APWA) Work Area Traffic Control Handbook (WATCH) standards, sets-up traffic safety devices and barricades to control traffic around worksites and special events and ensures safe conditions for the general public and city workers.
- Ensures the proper maintenance of tools by cleaning and checking tools after use and performs minor maintenance work on motorized power tools.
- Assists with Inspections and/or repairs of streets and drainage systems at frequent intervals to insure that all aspects of the systems are functioning properly. Reports deficiencies to Supervision.
- Establishes positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/ local agencies, City management and staff, and the public.
- Fills out daily job reports and daily vehicle condition reports and other reports as required by City or department.
- Sewer Maintenance Assignment includes:
- Participates in the work of a crew engaged in the maintenance and repair of sewer mains, storm drains, and lift stations; assists in the operation of the Vactor/Jetter to clean sewer lines; clean blockages to sewer lines and storm drains.
- Works in lines, vaults and other confined spaces utilizing proper safety techniques and equipment in accordance with CalOSHA, City and departmental safety policies and procedures.
- Operates a variety of light, medium and heavy-duty motorized vehicles, and equipment such as dump trucks, pick-up trucks, skip loaders, backhoes, vacuum trucks, televising van, sewer line inspection and cleaning equipment, directional light board, hazardous gas detectors and a variety of other hand, hydraulic and power tools, and motorized equipment; cleans and maintains tools and equipment used in the field.
- Operates sewer video equipment and software to assess new and existing sewer mains and structures.
- Responds to sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) and participates in restoring flow containment and clean-up.
- Locates and marks underground wastewater utilities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
